Well, not too many WIXers came to the Legends tent while we were there. Of course Tim was there and I did get to meet Tulio which was nice. Also participated in the Tora ground show - shooting off some blanks and then some not-too great photos. It was fun talking with the various veterans and seeing some good flying. Got to talk briefly with a couple of well-known warbird pilots and had the pleasure of finally seeing Glacier Girl fly!

Here are a few pictures:

Lone Star was there with several planes. Great guys and toughing it out. As one of their guys said - it's nice to spend some time working on keeping the planes going rather than digging through piles of mess.
Image
The crowd seemed pretty good, but I would say that a very small percentage of them actually came to meet the WWII veterans - which concerns me.

Some nice fighters...

Did you really think I could go without posting an L-bird shot?

Someone on WIX mentioned bringing this bird...

Tulio, sorry I missed you. I was going back and forth between the CF static area and the UH-1E on the warbird ramp. Gonna go back out tomorrow ?

Rick, I had to leave Saturday around noon, forced out by a migraine headache.

Sorry I missed meeting you. I won't go back today Sunday.

Also met -briefly- Ryan Short. I made a faux-pas when I bought a book from his friend, and took with me what I thought was a brochure.

Luckily, Ryan pursued me -gun in hand- and everything was soon settled to the satisfaction of the gun-toting party : ) Sorry about that, Ryan.

Saludos,

Tulio

From Saturday. A few thoughts. First of all the unbelievable weather. I can't remember WOH having good weather 2 days in a row for quite a while. Best flying display: The C17 "short field" landing demo. Most disappointing: Why no Raptor-I have yet to see one live. Best moment: My flight in Lone Star's Stearman after the show. Got to see my house, Johnson Space Center, and the Kemah Boardwalk from the air.

Hey Tulio,

I was hoping you'd post here! I wanted to apologize about that whole thing. I knew you didn't mean to do it and fought with myself for a minute or two about whether or not to say something - especially to a fellow WIXer. Anyhow, the business side of me got the better of my judgment. For the record that wasn't a real gun and it WAS NOT in my hand! It was a blank firing .45 that I got to use some during the TORA show on the ground with the reenactors and it stayed holstered. I hope you weren't too bothered .
As it was, my attitude wasn't what it should've been for an airshow as I was VERY annoyed watching folks pay for signed photos of the guy kissing the girl on VJ day - and we - maybe 5 items the whole day! Talk about misplaced priorities. Not to say anything bad about him, but I don't think the guy even really saw combat and folks were just swooning over there where my vet was daily landing right behind enemy lines to rescue wounded soldiers, flying combat photographers over enemy territory at low level, and all kind of other stuff, and folks hardly gave a care.
The brochure Tulio was talking about was something I put together last week to try and educate folks about the L-birds and hopefully elevate the story of these guys who flew into combat zones unarmed except for their .45s. We sold all of TWO of them (So yours was doubly special Tulio!) so I learned a lesson on business ventures as well... :(
One thing that did make me happy was actually getting to talk to Mr. Hinton and Mr. Pardue - who were both really gracious, and Mr. Rieder - (who gave what my sisters said was the best airshow announcing job they'd heard). That was funny because we were really having a slow time in the autograph tent and I had just short of a bet with a guy about whether or not I could make it to the announcers area to see if they would mention the tent. To make a long story short, before I was done I got to go up there briefly to deliver the message! That was pretty cool, and the guys up their were cordial to what must've been quite the odd intrusion. They DID mention it shortly thereafter, which was quite nice.

OOOOOH!....Nice Pics, love the Huey with the setting sun behind! Looks like a good week-end for an air show!

Though people keeping their money in their pockets can be a bummer. I understand that, the last 8 months have kicked me in the gut pretty hard. Thanks for all the pics so I can be there in abstensia!

Ryan:

I wrote my comment in jest.

You could not have been more polite and well mannered.

It was simply my fault because I did not read the sign, and assumed that I was picking up a brochure.

I believe that part of the problem with attendance at the tent, was the sign outside: It read "Autographs" and nothing else. If it had stated that there were WW-II veterans inside, signing autographs, probably more people would have visited.

After walking around the tables, I did not see other book that I wished to buy....

And last but not least: With all due respect: Your sisters are two of the most beautiful girls that I have seen in a very long time!

Saludos,

Tulio

Tulio - thanks for the comments! I enjoyed meeting you. I certainly agree with you about the tent. As far as the sisters - they're the best a guy could ask for. BTW - they can shoot some good photos, too! I got 'em a good spot for Tora - so here are a few shots - posted with their permission...

Several of the defender's blank-firing .45s were mis-firing - including mine (not pictured).

Here's a shot of the brochure Tulio mentioned - It had information on the aircraft and Mr. Todd, a model, and an artwork-style profile on the back for autographs intended for framing.

Yours truly numbering the artwork

Lots more to sort through.

You couldnt have asked for better weather!! Both days were fantastic. Sorry I didnt get a chance to come down to the Legends tent, Ryan! It felt great to have the LSFM planes back home and doing their part in the history lessons!
The Vietnam reenactment for both days was a really cool sight to see. Both Hueys zooming around, AC-47 (with pyro) yanking and banking was also a real treat. Ricks A-26 was a great wonderful addition as well.

It was good to see Glacier Girl flying this year at the show.

It looks like the attendance was a little sparse from the parking lot shots. With the economy very bad and the worse not over, I think folks are going to be pretty cautious with what is left of their money. I'm glad the weather was good and most of all that it was a safe show. Does anyone that has been on the island lately have any updates on storm damage. I am not seeing anything in the news these days.

You know, for a show that you have to pay to get into, it seemed to me that there were LOTS of people there. The flightline was always crowded. I just thought that the traffic to the Legends tent was down from what I remembered last year. At one point last year there was a decently long line of folks trying to get the Doolittle Raiders' signatures.
Bill - I'm not sure that folks in TX are really feeling the pinch just yet. I know I'm not really. Also, right now gas prices are down into the 2.10-2.40 range along my route to work - I think I paid 2.14 last week and it's still dropping! So folks have a little more disposable income right now than earlier in the summer.
