I posted yesterday about finding a printing error in a copy of H*** Hawks. Zenith Press is taking care of the problem and my thanks go out to those offering suggestions. What I've read so far is pretty good.

To follow up - my comments earlier about the dust jacket design nothwithstanding, this book is very well written - it's really hard to put it down, but you have to at some point because it's not a short book - and probably the best "look" at the 9th AF's tactical war as seen through the eyes of one of the hard-working P-47 outfits I've read.

Very up close and personal style of warfare. The vivid descriptions of the 1 Jan 45 Bodenplatte Luftwaffe attack on the 365th's base at Metz, for example, is especially well written with first-person vivid descriptions of the events. Those Bf 109 seats must have had springs on them ... heh heh - read the book!

If you are at all interested in the 9th AF's war, get it!

Jack Cook expressed curiosity about why Turley and an Eighth AF P-47 are on the cover of H-E-L-L Hawks. The answer is marketing. The publisher chooses a photo for the cover that gives them the best "grab," and the authors have little to do with cover design. Once chosen, we wrote for the photo a generic caption on the 4th page, noting how pilots and ground crews worked closely to get the mission done. We don't claim the cover photo is a shot of a H-e-l-l Hawk or Ninth AF Thunderbolt. We did the best we could, and we think the cover photo reflects the spirit of the men in the 365th FG and Ninth AF. :-).

Happy reading, all.

My 'favorite' cover photo is on Edwards Park's book "Angels Twenty" about his P39 and P47 flying with the 41st FS, 35th FG.

It has a flight of Navy TBFs on the cover.

Never did get that. Seems like there would be similar and accurate photo from the 365th.

Oh well, I guess the publisher must know best

Um... I'd say you are missing a word there. It's actually 'poor marketing'. Good marketing would find an appropriate shot that would work. You are correct in saying authors have little or nothing to do with covers, or design (and at times, thank God for that!) but when publishing for a niche such as this it's important that the publisher's designer is fed by the editor (perhaps from the author) suitable appropriate material, because the target audience will notice. This isn't the Boys big book of 'planes level market, and clearly a specialised publisher, not someone reprinting a title they don't understand the content of.

The proof of why that's poor marketing is that fully 50% of this discussion has focussed on a poor cover design rather than what's clearly a very highly regarded book, letting themselves and their authors down.

Glad to heat the publishers are sorting out mas' faulty copy. When I was working in bookshops, I well recall having to explain to people that ~amazingly~ books weren't opened until they were browsed or bought, and mistakes do go through - glad to replace them though!

Cheers,
