This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

The airport was shutdown after 911 (too close to Atlanta Hartsfield International), & last I saw it, looked like skin & bones. I was told that it was owned by some guy that would in no way sell it. First time I saw it, looked great. Last time I saw it. well you know. I don't know what ever became of it. The whole deal is just a dam shame. As I understand it many offers were made to buy it, but once again you know the rest of the story.

It was my understanding that before the pizza 450 stearman, they had this 300 stearman to pull banners. They sold it when they got the 450's and the guy that had it scared himself and parked it. I think it was forsale but he was asking way to much for a stearman that was sitting out for (15+years) so long. Last I heard it may have sold and moved to the Stockbridge GA airport(inside).

A friend really bought a Swift at a garage sale for less money than you would pay for a new washer and dryer. Found my Staggerwing in a boat storage yard after the owner died and left it to his two hippie sons. Stuff is still out there just be patient.

Mustanglover,
The Mustang is yours, but I'm pretty sure I told myself that the Spit is mine.

No Lynn it was Capt. Groundloop. He sold it about the time he got his C-45.

I know of a few. There is supposed to be a PBY in a hangar in Quebec owned by an AME (Aircraft Maintenance Engineer) who makes his living overseas and comes home every year or so to run up the engines.
I know of a Beech Staggerwing that used to be one of two! at the Hampton Airfield in Northampton N.H. This one is still in NH sitting beside a barn. Most of the Staggerwing crowd know of it and a few have made offers but the owner wants too much so it is just rotting away. At least that was the last I had heard of it a few years ago.
There is also supposed to be a P-51 Mustang near Portland, ME somewhere. A friend was approached about working on it a decade or so ago but even then the owner didn't really have the resources. Don't know if that has changed lately.

Back in 2004 I was in NY State to take possession of Fleet 16b that I was importing to Canada.
While waiting for it to show up, the local skydive asked me to come with him as he had something to show me.
They have a barn that is converted as a club house.
He took me uostairs and then said look over the rear of the loft.
There down in the unrestored rear of the ban sat a C-195 all dismantled. The engine was mounted to a vertical beam. Everthing was there but covered in dust.
Apparently many years before , the owner had a minor ground loop and just took it apart and never fixed it.
He has no intention of selling and the parachute guy was afraid to even give me the owners name as the Para Club awas renting the field from the C195 owner.Too bad as it was a real time piece.
There are many others arond here. Up until 15 years ago there was a JN 4 Canuk ina barn, a T-Moth fuselage that went for $500.
An RCAF harvard that was never civil registered It finally got bought 2 yrs ago. The list goes on and on
Waht is happening right now it all the guys too young for WW2 started to buy surplus a/c parts etc.
Now these guys are dying off and all kinds of things are coming out of hiding. You just have to keep your eyes and ears open.
One more , 1993 , I bought an fully airworthy 1947 J3 Cub from a guy for $8000.00. It only took three hours to do the C OF A .
The seller said he just wanted to be able to recover the money he spent to buy it in 1971. I bought it asap. Sometimes you get lucky.

Don't forget about Austin Acres, here in Midland, TX. If you want a bunch of airplane stuff, gimme a shout. It can all be yours for a bargain basement deal.

Back in the late 70's or early 80's the city of Wilmington Ohio bought the recently closed Clinton AFB. A friend if mine leased a hangar/workshop on the field to use as a base for his skydiving business. In the building was a large "empty" shipping container. Inside was a fresh out of overhaul dis-assembled L20/U6A DeHavilland Beaver preserved for overseas shipment. It took some time, but he ended up with a commercial reg. and used it regularly for his jump operations.

Steve, that story sounds familiar. Man thats been long ago. I believe you got the story straight. Next time I see Ron Gause I'll ask him. (he used to run the airport in question).

I helped to clear out a storage room that had a Tri-pacer and Colt inside. I got the Colt for doing the work. I later sold it and more than made up my costs.

There is an old, delapidated "hangar" on a now defunct duster strip about 15 miles from where I'm sitting that has at least 3 or 4 Stearman carcasses packed inside. All kinds of other parts too, including a couple of R-2800's and a bunch of Lycoming or Continental 4 bangers still in their crates. At least it was there 4-5 years ago when I was invited inside for a look around.
