The movie was a 1989 TV pilot called The Road Raiders. With a once-in-a-lifetime cast (Bruce Boxleitner! The Barbarian Brothers! Leslie Jordan?!?) it was supposed to be "the A-Team does WWII". Here's a promo clip:

THANKS, I knew I'd seen that on TV at some point but had given up trying to find info on it. I had recalled that P-40/38 truck hybrid but don't think I saw the P-51 truck being used. It would be neat to see one of these custom hot rod places building something like that, huh?
Speaking of which, I spotted this at the MVPA convention in Portland this August:

I'm confused, is it "if airplanes were road vehicles or if road vehicles were airplanes"? :D

Just remembered something very interesting - going back to the '70s Air Classics "Warbird Report" section, there was an item about a clipping from a late Forties car magazine that described a dry lakes racer built from the fuselage of a P-51C! It went on to say that the driver crashed it on a speed run and was killed. I've heard of racers built from drop tanks, but not a fuselage - sounds like a research project to me!

While digging through some old photos, I found some shots from Universal Studios I got of a P-51 race car and another that used P-38 parts and the engine/cowling off a P-40. I know these were built for a movie, but I never saw the film they were made for. I'll throw them on he scanner and post them here eventually...

HERE YOU GO, the ultimate airplane car!

I have no idea what movie this was made for, although I do recall catching part of the film on Tv many years ago. Note the Mustang car in the background, just a complete airframe, sans wheels on truck runing gear. God alone knows what real airplane parts went into this, if any...
