There is an SU-27 that is, or soon will be, based in Reno.

Somebody needs to get some pics!

The MiG-29s at Nellis (static display, not flying) are ex Moldovian aircraft. There are no Flankers at Nellis.

Does that mean the MiG-29 at the NMUSAF is really ex-VVS?

If the one at the NMUSAF is Moldovan then yes. All those aircraft were full capability Soviet aircraft, not the down rated export version. I don't remember the unit number right now but they came from the Guards fighter regiment that was based in Moldova before the break up.

By the way we just got one of them at Pima.

Interesting.

They seem to tell two different stories on their own website, though

TAC AIR currently operates 5 types of aircraft; the L-29 Super Delfin, L-39, Mig-15, CF-5D and SU 27 Flanker. Our pilots are the most highly trained and experienced aviators of any company in this industry. TAC AIR aircraft are also available for commercial leasing opportunities.

TAC AIR currently operates three aircraft types; a significantly upgraded version of the Aero Vodochody L-29 Delfin, the L-39 and the latest versions of the MiG-17 produced in Poland (Lim-5 and Lim-6).

If they're able to get an import license for and -- more importantly -- actually be able to fly and maintain a FLANKER, then good on them. That would be pretty cool.

I'd have absolutely love to have flown against the Indian Flankers. My squadronmates flew WITH them at Red Flag, and I missed out because I had to participate in an airshow here in England at the same time...I was bummed.

MiG-29 at NMoUSAF - is that bird not an ex Iraqi machine? Mustangdriver?
It is funny to read the source of the Use’s MiG-29's (Moldavia) on an internet thread! Before 02 or so you had to show proof of a clearance to get into the petting zoo now it is a museum open to visitors! Funny how things change.

Jamesintucson, it is awesome to read about all the new editions, can not wait to get back.

I do not know if they are phony targets or actual airframes but Su-27 family types (at minimum shapes) exist on the Avon Park range.

The Mig 29 is a ex-Moldovian bird as I'm told. There is another 29 over on Patterson field, not sure aobut it's background.

Before restoration (repaint)

This is the ex-Iraqi bird that was buried in the desert.

Shay,

The second bird is a MiG-25, and you are correct about were it came from.
I think this is one of several 25s, a few 21s, a Su-25, and a solitary 29 that came from a "safe keeping (safer!)" pit just outside of Al Taqqaddum AB or Al Asad AB memory is hazy on which one.

You guys are probably correct about the NMoUSAF bird being an exMoldavian jet.

Interestingly enough here is what the NMUSAF has to say about the MIG 29 they have on display.

NMUSAF wrote:The aircraft on display was an early model Soviet Air Force MiG-29A (S/N 2960516761) assigned to the 234th Gvardeiskii Istrebitelnii Aviatsionnii Polk (234th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment) stationed at Kubinka Air Base near Moscow. It was one of the six MiG-29s that made a good will visit to Kuoppio-Rissala, Finland, in July 1986. This event marked the first public display of the MiG-29.

My understanding is that the MiG.25 at NMUSAF is missing the wings.

The Mig 25 at the NMUSAF was buried by Sadams forces, and recovered by the USAF. The wings are a bit of a mystery as they were never found in the desert. We do have another set that are on the way to use from another Mig 25.

Mustangdriver,

Did the wings come from one of the Al Asad birds, UM by the tower perhaps?

There's a thread here somewhere in the archives that has more info on those Su-27's. One of our forum members, Hogdriver44, is with the organization that is restoring/reassembling the Flankers. He also posted some pictures of those aircraft in the thread. I've tried looking for it, but can't seem to find it.
