Garry was (and hopefully still is) a heck of a nice guy...... I wish him well, good health and a long life.

Clay Clabo's "Iron Mistress" was painted black.

Jack Hovey's airplane was black for many years.

IFIRC, Earl's initial problem was a broken or stuck throttle linkage. He was trying to get the beast on the ground but still had some power. He was trying to use a closed emergency runway which heads almost straight toward the pit and hangar area.

The photo was taken as he made a near 90 degree turn to land on the ramp after finally figuring out how to shut it all down. I've seen photos that prove he had less than 10 inches wingtip clearance from the ground during that no- speed turn.

Could have been very very ugly...

You mean since 51s first came out on the civilian market? Since I really like black 51s, here are some of those not already mentioned in this thread that I can think of straight away!

Add to that N8678E which was black for a while in the early 1960s, and I seem to remember having read somewhere that N5073K was black before it went to El Salvador. Could be wrong on the last one though. Over to Vlado on that one.

Hoveys Mustang was black when it was known as "Mr. Choppers"; owned by Chuck Crosby here at BLI. First registered N6318T, then N35N before being sold to Jack Hovey. And that was all a long time ago, I must be getting old...

I didn't know that part of the story before...thanks

the approach was quite spectacular but after he got it down and level it seemed to be routine....I did wonder why they took a clean flight suit out to the plane...

Pretty sure I've got a shot of that somewhere that Vlado sent to me. I am on the road currently and don't have access to all my files.... :(

Which was the black painted Mustang that sat at Santa Rosa, CA for years? Someone had backed a truck into the tail?

Let me guess. You're working as a roadie for The Beach Boys at the moment. Big Hawaiian shirts, sunglasses and strong margueritas..? 8)

I have no knowledge of any damaged 51 sitting up there, but my first thought goes in the direction of Jack Hovey's N3580 which was black with a white N#. Unfortunately I'm at work right now, so can't readily find a photo of it. Will look for one to scan tonight if I have the time. Getting ready for a three week California trip on Thursday morning!

Hey T J that sounds correct because my dad took a picture of Jack Hovey's N3580 at Reno '78 and it is in the all black scheme, but the rudder is silver like maybe it just got recovered with dope and fabric...
