Yes Peter...more details please, if you don't mind. Your horizons are dead level...that's quite a feat if you are shooting blind. Or, as was mentioned above, do you have a remote viewing screen rigged up? I'd love to learn more if you don't mind sharing your technology and ideas.

Thank you either way.

Tom,

Digital camera. Electric wire and or wireless shutter release depending on interference experienced at Duxford airshows.

Carbon fibre monopod with substantial tilting head. Tilt to about 10 degrees

Frame aircraft at eye level as normal and step back a few paces or zoom out to allow margin generosity.

Elevate camera and concentrate on getting the aircraft visually centred left/right by judgement. Rock the camera forward then slowly back taking about six shots .

At least a couple will have the aircraft in frame with sufficient margins all round to use Photoshop or PSP to rotate horizon true and crop to normal clearance proportions.

Good luck.

Very interesting technique, Peter. I truly appreciate your sharing it with us...can't wait to give it a try myself sometime. I can see where it would be especially useful for photos of airplanes such as P-38s and Cessna UC-78 Bobcats, Twin Beeches and such, where those monster motors block the view of so much of the airplane's fuselage. What a great idea! Sure turns out some very nice and unusual photos.

Thanks again...

Must take some practice, but can't argue with results. Very interesting pics. I was thinking you could mount a little webcam in the accessory shoe and do a wired or wireless connection to a cheap camcorder at the bottom of the pole to establish where the camera is pointing -- this would even work with real, i.e. film cameras -- but clearly you don't need it.

Polecam discussion on the 'PlaneTalk' forum has yielded a couple of variations.
