Quite simply, Oshkosh isn't what it used to be.

As for Mustangs, fighters, ect., the doctors and lawyers aren't in the scene anymore. Those were the guys that really went out and flew.

I was at the show the whole week, and like you guys said, most Mustangs never left the ground. I never saw Barbara Jean with the canopy cover off.

When I was talking to Nathan before he took the Checkertail up for the show, we were talking about how people bring their airplanes to sit. Albeit Nathan sat out the last show due to a tiny mechanical problem, nobody really goes and flies.

Since I went to Duxford to the Flying Legends show, never again will I be impressed with an American show. The fighters need to be in formation, they need to be flown like FIGHTERS. Same goes for all other aircraft too!

Of course the rediculously overpowering FAA has alot to do with the lackluster shows in the U.S. as well.

I'd have to say the non-Warbird airshow highlights for me were Kyle Franklin, Matt Younkin and the day Greg Koontz flew the Super Decathlon routine. I'm sure some people may think Kyle's whole pirate themed performance may be childish but it was his dad's performance as Zar in the Aerostar that had a big effect on me as a kid. The Aerostars, Trojan Horsemen and Aeroshell were also great. I enjoy Mike Goulian and was kinda bummed he only flew that first day. Sean Tucker and The Collaborators are great as well.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but the actual warbirds show wasn't that great. The Mustang turnout was good, but not much flew (that's a big part of it for most of us). No TBMs flew in the show Thurs-Sat when I was there, neither of the 2 Corsairs flew (not counting the racer part of the show), no P-47s there, no Skyraiders, no Hellcats or Bearcats, neither of the Sea Furies flew, only one Wildcat, neither P-38 flew in the warbirds show, .

Not saying that Oshkosh wasn't good, just that it was disappointing from a warbird standpoint. The B-25s were great, nice to see the YAF D-model up in the show, but all the stuff sitting at aeroshell square just sat.

I just don't get the jets making passes behind the crowd, the L-birds up at 500 feet and at the 1000 foot line (I love L-birds, but THEY ARE SMALL, and maybe should be closer?), and so many warbirds sitting all week long.

Flame away people, but the "big" warbirds show on Friday was a disjointed mess. Bombers were up for about an hour loitering out of sight, and only after some FA-18s came in (arrivals) did the bombers come back and do the two passes before the pyro. The 4 P-51s that we thought launched to do a missing man just came back, the missing man having been performed by the Trojan Horsemen (who are very good, mind you, but T-28s aren't Mustangs).

PS- I think only 8 P-51s flew on Friday, and none of the new award-winners. Disappointing.

Actually, I was being sarcastic. Even if only a handful of the warbirds at AirVenture actually flew during the show, that's still more than MOST airshows around the country. Just the fact that they were present was enough for me, as well as a number of veterans that I spoke to at the Timeless Voices tent. An Avenger pilot we interviewed was brought to tears at the sight of the TBM. I'm sure Warbirdriver can attest to this. And even if they didn't fly the show, where else are you going to see such fantastic restorations in one place at the same time?

I for one was happy to be at the show....even if I didn't get to see much of it....

Zack

Hey Zack,

Sooooooo true. I spoke with this gentleman for a while. He was shot down over Iwo Jima and his radio operator was lost. He arranged his day so that he could be there when I fired up to go home. You could tell by the look on his face that he was very happy to see and hear "his" plane again.

As far as flying in the show, the warbirds didn't fly every day. I went home on Thursday, a day when the WB's don;t fly at all. The plane was scheduled to be flown by one of the other guys that flies it on Wednesday but only the CJ-6's flew. For me, I've flown at OSH since 1986 in T-34's, T-6's, C-45's, C-47's and the B-17. Paul D and I paid for all the fuel and oil to get it there and back and I just didn't feel like adding any more to the fuel bill. Yes, EAA will reimburse airshow fuel; but not until the fall. Remember all these planes arrive at the owners expense; we (the planes) aren't paid to be there. So there ya have it. Besides, I was volunteering; no time to fly!

Per EAA - Warbirds fly a 1-hr show on Tuesday, 20 min on Wed (in the past, this has been 'fighter day', but this year in honor of the anniversary of the Yak/CJ6, they flew, which makes sense....) Thursday is a 'stand-down' day (so that's when they do all the forums for the owners/pilots), Friday and Saturday are 'big' (70 min) shows, but we have folks departing Friday after the show, and many on Saturday morning, so the Sat 'big' show is sometimes scratched together.

The bombers (and their top cover) were supposed to have a much bigger part of the show on Friday - but those F18's called in 30 miles out 'bingo fuel'. Hmm... 30 miles out, bingo fuel - middle of airshow - how about DIVERT TO MKE. Instead, they chose to completely disrupt the warbird show. Sorry - we were NOT happy about that one.

I'll confine my comments to 'Legends. You can spend three full days there (if you go on Friday - not a lot of people, but great flying to see still) and be totally saturated with warbirds. Spits everywhere, Mustangs, et al. I spent a good bit of time on that small hill over by the Land Warfare Museum on the west side (IIRC), and the planes 'arc in' right in front of your eyes as they are coming in for their passes/pulling off after completing passes on Sat and Sun. The sounds are awesome!

I've never been to OSH, but I'll trust those who say it's a must-see. But I can speak for Legends ... ya gotta go! :D

I have to agree with Rich on some of his observations. This was my 20th Oshkosh since 1982. I was on the field Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I was personally disappointed at the overall Warbird aircraft remaining on the field, especially in the (other than Mustangs) fighter category. Just a couple years ago we had multiple Wildcats, Bearcats, Corsairs of all models, Sea Furys, Jugs, Skyraiders, etc. To say it was "weak" this year wouldn't be out of line. I will say though, that maybe 15 years ago it was almost a fantasy to see more B/C model Mustangs fly. Seeing two at the show at one time was very cool!! More great things to come in the movement I'm sure. I also think having so many Warbirds down at Aero Shell takes away from the Warbird area a great deal. The big bombers (for instance) would help draw more people to our area and give them a real sense of the warbird movement and population. I have to commend the CAF for their efforts and participation given their latest endeavors for growth and exposure of their organization. As always, it was a pleasure to see so many friends and fellow Warbird members like Tim Savage, John Mazula, Kermit Weeks and many others. Oshkosh is always a pleasure to attend, but being a Warbird guy true and true, its always exciting when your hopes and anticipations are fulfilled when you walk onto the Warbird flight line. It goes without saying, but my thanks to all the owners who brought their aircraft, as well as to all the people that make the Warbird organization what it is today. I'm looking forward to next year already!
