That has to be one of the nicest Mustang restorations I've ever seen. Just a shame that Jack Ilfrey passed away a few years back.
I just don't understand the present fad for spending a fortune and a huge amount of time on a supposed 'authentic' restoration and then blinging the thing up to a mirror finish, thus losing the whole 'look and feel' of a WWII P-51. This aircraft, along with 'Princess Elizabeth', really looks the part. I just love that exhaust stain that's starting to form along the fuselage side.
Where's this one based? I'd really like to see it for myself someday soon.

My bets are on this one to take Grand Champ. Finish turned out AMAZING! Bare skin, flat paint... oh... and NOT blue camo! HA!
Mike... this one will live near San Antonio.

The Malcom hooded Old Crow looks nice too, but I agree... I hope this one takes the award.

I have no doubt Jack's looking down at her and grinning from ear to ear.

Will live somewhere "NEAR" San Antonio. Now we are getting closer to identifying the new owner. I don't think its' coming to the underground bunker at 5c1 so it must be going up the road a little piece. Now that would be OK with me.

That's the best looking bird I have seen in some time!

Oh no you're not!! He works in SA and I'm assume lives there to
I've never heard his name ever mentioned anyplace with anything having to do with warbirds. Although he was a warfighter in his not to distant past.

So the mystery continues. This is more fun than knowing who it is.

AMEN!!!! AMEN AGAIN!!!!
That's why I was so disappointed that Frenesi was getting done over, as it was done in flat paint, great to look at. I can't stand looking at these "chrome-plated-hawk-kit" Mustangs. No offense to the owners like Nathan Davis and Kermit, but sheesh, they were never in a mirror finish in wartime!

I don't know about that. There are many photographs and histories showing and discussing crew chiefs keeping their charge "highly polished" so that it produced less drag. There is one specific photo that comes to mind, and it's been posted on WIX before, of a Tuskegee crew chief polishing his aircraft to a mirror finish in the combat zone.
Now I agree that this was not always the case, and may not be so on Jack Ilfrey's "HJGB", but is was a know common practice, so don't always say it doesn't look authentic.
I like it...and I also liked the patina on "Princess Elizabeth" and "Twilght Tear". I hate silver paint though!
Also, as a side note, how come no one has ever used Ilfrey's P-51 scheme before? It's really AWESOME!
