That's pretty neat. I'm glad the ALS L-2s don't have them, though. I can just see the kinds of odd looks we might get at airshows! "Hey son, how are you going to get home" or "How'd you break the propeller like that?"

I've seen that. I wonder, is this something one could possibly 'MacGuyver together' if your down in the bush
with one bent prop blade? (all things considered, of course). Are there any pitch change requirements?

Hence the stupidest remark in aviation: "If it looks right, it flies right." Actually, there's a lot of great designs and ideas killed because it's 'odd looking'.

I remember at Dx about 20 years ago they temporarily hung (I think) a Buchon prop on a Spit, or vice versa & it was reported to "feel all wrong". Something about the pitch control being all out of wack.

IIRC th single blade prop for 40-50 hp Tayor/Piper Cubs and Taylorcraft light aircraft (Taylor designs, BTW) had a pitch vs RPM hub that allowed low low pitch for take off and a higher setting for cruise. Again, IIRC, the blade teetered fore and aft on the hub as part of the pitch change. It was all automatic and quite efficient. Later engine developments (more HP!) made the single blade set up un-nessesary and it passed from commercial viability.

Many thanks again to all who posted an answer to my question. It's nice to have a prop-er understanding of this aspect of aviation! :D

The one bladed prop was supposed to be the most effecient (always cutting clean air) of the props. Now you all went and ruined it, I have won many a bar room bet with that little bit of trivia.

The CAF's Martin B-26 and all the rest were originally equiped with 4 blade Curtis Electrics but availability (or maybe cost) was a problem duiring the restoration. A pair of 3-blade Ham Standards from a surplus C-123 became available and were used when Caroline first flew again. Talking with the guys flying it (Vernon, JK and others), it vibrated badly and was a real dog speed and climb-wise. When the correct 4-blade props were installed, it was smooth and alot better preformer. There is a difference!

Is there anyone out there with one of those Everell props? How about the drawings so that one could be manufactured?
