Exactly, give pilots a view down, but have some headroom from the bombardier.

I think the last model make is straight for simplicity of construction.

I found the reference I was looking for.
According to the Putnam Bristol Aircraft since whenever, pilots complained that the Mk.I windscreen was too far ahead of them. As originally designed the symmetrical Mk.IV nose interfered with the pilot's vision when landing so it was scalloped to solve the problem while still leaving headroom for the bomb aimer.
