i think it needs to be saved. It's a nice museum and Naval Aviation has done so much for our history, and without the carrier, no wings of gold. What happened to the E?

I take offense with that remark.

The Battleship New Jersey is an excellent museum ship, moored on a very nice section of the Deleware River, and is helping revitalize Camden, a city which was racked by race riots in the 1960's and needed the lift. Since her arrival, the old RCA Victor plant has been renovated to create upscale condominiums, the River Sharks stadium has appeared next to the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, and the whole section is improving daily. The New Jersey State Aquarium(now under some sponsor name) is co-located with her.

Also to consider, the Delaware River is a freshwater berth- the corrosion level here is much lower than the salt water berthing at Navy Pier Hoboken. Also, Hoboken has plenty of other attractions nearby with the Intrepid, NYC in general and the aircraft museum at Floyd Bennett Field.

Berthed where she is, she has a fine view of Philadelphia, the birthplace of this nation, as well as the USS Olympia, Admiral Dewey's flagship at the battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish American War, and the oldest surviving steel hulled ship as well as survivor of the Great White Fleet. And next to her is the USS Becuna, a converted Balao Class WWII submarine.

We love the USS New Jersey down here in the best part of the state. Camden is coming back. Slowly sure, but you are grandly misinformed about the state of things where the USS New Jersey is docked. Have you ever been by to see her? I think it would be great if they dragged the hulk of the SS United States up from storage in South Philadelphia, and restored her as a sister attraction...

Oh, and by the way, The USS New Jersey was built only a couple miles down river from where she now sits, at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. She Has Come HOME.

Still proud of South Jersey.

The money for the Intrepid will be found. NYC is a great place for fund raising. It may just take a little longer. Getting anything done here, especially in the way of construction, is just more expensive and time consuming than in a normal place.

I do not expect the NYC government to chip in much extra, if at all. Intrepid is a tourist attraction, but it would be a stretch to call it a "draw". With so many attractions in this town, the Intrepid is a drop in the bucket.

It does show the kind of money it takes to maintain a museum ship. We are talking big league here, a couple of orders of magnitude above what it costs to acquire and maintain a warbird. Just think, if they overshoot the funding target by just a little bit, they can afford half a dozen appropriate airworthy warbirds (Corsair, Skyraider, etc.) to retire to the hangar deck.

I am not sure where I see the hang up. Why wouldn't we want to restore this WWII aircraft carrier and it's aircraft for display? I've been there and I am excited about the restoration. You can't look at it as if it's taking money away from the flying aircraft. It's not. Two totally different ballgames here.

The point is that's a lot of $$$ and where's it coming from??? The gov't???
Maybe we get some elderly folks to cut back on the medication? It's not part of the arsenal of democracy anymore
but father a tourist attraction where Robbie Kneviel jumps his motorcycle and Nicholas Cage makes movies.
They need to support themselves.

Does the same go for a warbird owned by a private individual? That he needs to support himself and shouldn't be asking for donations? What's the difference? Oh that's right I forgot about the double standard of static aircraft to flying aircraft that exists here.

What in the world does old people and their medication have to do with this ship?

Jack I think you have been watching too much CNN  .

The ship may not have the most distinguished battle history of surviving Essex carriers, but it is plenty distinguished and while in NYC, it has been without question the most visible and most visited of preserved carriers or possibly of any museum ship apart from the Constitution.

The money will come mostly or entirely from private donors. Don't forget this is NYC, there are people here who have that kind of money lost in their sofa cushions.

While the Intrepid has been somewhat good for NYC, NYC has been VERY good for the Intrepid, and will continue to be. I guess I could imagine worse fates, short of scrapping, than for it to be sent to someplace like Camden, but I'm at a loss to think of one at the moment.

I agree with Robbie Roberts comments on the USS New Jersey....it is a nice museum and a very nice area and even tho the area around it is supposedly crime ridden, the battleship park is very scenic and beautiful and is a step in the right direction...I visited the ship in 2005 and my brother and I had a great time getting lost in the back half of the NJ trying to find our way up and down its passageways, heckuva lotta fun....and to the south, you can see the red white and blue striped funnels of the ocean liner SS United States, which would also make a great exhibit if someone would do something with her....
