Good point. I dunno if the 3350 will maintain that hp rating at 50,000 ft. or not, but with the PRT's (Power Recovery Turbines), I suspect it is certainly able to maintain close to that at high altitudes.

And sorry Glen...it seems I've gone and hijacked yet another thread with useless info & opinions.

True for the most part, but there was at least one that flew with R4360s for a while.

Yes, the JRM-2 Caroline Mars....

Carolina Mars JRM-2 (C-FLYM)
- Serial No, 9268
- Last Mars delivered to US Navy May 1948
- Designated the JRM-2 with more powerful Pratt & Whitney 'Corncob' R-4360 Wasp Senior radial engines
- Engines produced 3000 horsepower each, for a total power availability of 12,000 horsepower
- Converted to Waterbomber 1960 C-FLYM
- Destroyed October 12, 1962 on the ground in a freak wind storm at Victoria International Airport

The TBO's went up allot from that 200 hrs.
I think there are quite a few reno racers that are still sporting them. And I know of at least 3 KC-97's that are to be operational.
I agree the Turbo cyclone is the better engine.
I think the highest extracted HP was over 5000 for the 4360.

They do now. All 4 Mars were converted to the JRM-2 configuration after the Caroline Mars was completed as a JRM-2, and they had R-4360s. When they passed into civilian service, they were changed to R-3350s and redesignated JRM-3s because parts were more abundant for that engine (gee, does re-engining a warbird to an engine that's more abundant sound familiar anyone? :))

All you ever wanted to know about the 4360. I'm 200 pages into it now. Excellent book.

Some of Hemet Valley's C-119C's had R-4360-20's with the seven sets of high tension mags.I was highly impressed by the mag switches.

Here are a couple of pages from a C-124 manual showing the high tension mag switches as well as the neater system for the low tension that included an ignition analyzer.

Hawkins and Powers had a couple of C-97's in Alska for the 1981 Fish Haul. Here's a picture of one at Anchorage and a shot from my Super DC-3 of one of the C-97's starting engines at King Salmon.

The time did go up significantly in the late 60's and 70's when I flew them on KC-97L's in the TX ANG. Our Unit, 181st Sqd/136thARW, had some engines go as high as 1500 hours. I don't remember who the overhaul contractor was in the 70's, but they did a good job. We were the last outfit to fly the 97's and during the last year our engine reliablity was not good because we were not getting overhauls for replacements, but high time engines from the boneyard. Our last 97 arrived at DM with two feathered.

There are only 2 racers with 4360's. Dreadnought, and Furias. Furias has not raced since 2002, I believe.

Ouch, make that 3 racers, I forgot about race 57, Odegard's Corsair.
