another thing to check is the leads themselves, they could be shorting into the harness. Different engine, but we had a 1340 that on cross country flights, our wingman would ask if we pulled back on the power because he was catching up to us. We did not and never felt anything. One day while testing the harness, I got zapped thru the ignition shield. I removed the shielding and found a pinhole in the lead, pulled a new wire into the harness and no more complaints from the wingman.

Shep: I second Wheels Up's comment. Just about all mag lead numbering is **FIRING ORDER** and not cylinder number itself. Quite confusing and very easy to screw up. What I bet is happening is that #4 and 6 ARE firing, they are just firing on the exhaust stroke and thus not doing a thing. Might also as Matt said, ohm out the leads from the cig end to the mag end, or hit em with a megger (I Think Gary has one) to verify continuity and proper secondary side resistance.

Again, thanks to all for your advice...Wheels Up nailed it, we fixed it, and the engine runs like a top....er, a Ranger. We'll do some slow time flights after Christmas, but we expect no problems. The "three amigos" mechanics who worked on the engine, the installation, disassembly, reassembly, etc, etc, now proclaim themselves expert in Ranger engines...and they even allow as how carefully reading the engine book might have led them to discover the problem some 30 man hours earlier!

Glad to hear it is fixed Shep. The three amigos are working on your time....they care not how long it takes!
Six in a row that goes! I really liked the Rangers I flew. Very smooth engines with SEVEN main bearings. And the 24 they were tied to....very smooth balanced controls. Good luck Shep.
