This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Hey! I like Fox News! Better than the other crap news organizations out there.
Anyway, I'd like to see plane preserved as is...

Just thought I'd summarise that for those with less patience.

Fly it

Fly it. No better way to make tribute to the men who flew the P-38's. If we consign this stuff to static museums and take the soul away, we might as well have a big party and throw them all in the smelter. Better to be a dead viking in a fiery grave than a live one in a cage. And somebody put a bug in TIGHAR's office so we can know when they are about to f*** something up and get the jump on them.

Nice analogy :x

I would rather have a historic combat veteran for our kids kids, than your "fiery grave".
Ive seen so many "caged, soulless" static aircraft, and you are dead wrong.

So, if we scrap all statics at your party, we will really have forgotten fields.

Stop it, you two...stop it right now. It's this kind of thread that runs the risk of...

evolving into...

another Ron Burgundy moment.

I hope you're both happy now...

First things first, get if off the beach!

Then fill it up with cement and install it at the nearest childrens play ground!

With that plane and a goverment grant, I could, dare I say it? Rule the World!!

And once again, no, I am not a pilot!

Realistically, if Glacier Girl can be a flyer, ANY of them can.

But I agree, how much of the original airframe would be left? It DID belly in...

I side with JDK - probably not much left there to "restore" anyway. But for now, protect it and conserve it and just get it out of there.

What about the McGuire AFB P-38? That would seem a realistic trade target for a fibreglass Lightning.

LMAO @ Ron Burgundy.

As others have said I doubt there's enough in there to warrant a rebuild to fly, and if you're going to new-build and incorporate a few nuts and bolts to claim provenance I don't really see the point. If you want to build a P-38, just build it! It'd be interesting to see it conserved appropriately, but I fear chemistry is going to be a big enemy there.

So do I....

Tillerman (not a pilot).

Lets see someone get the thing out of the sand and then make the call about restoring it. It's only money, RIGHT?

There may never be another P-38 found.

It would be sad to just paint it and stick it on a pole.
