I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. My Grandfather was retired from the Navy. So; when Grandma got Cancer, she went to the Hospital at Travis AFB. I can't remember when this was, but; probably the late 60s.
I was sitting in a waiting room and they had the TV on. The movie was "Strategic Air Command". I was watching the movie when I happend to look down and talking to a Doctor was the same guy as in the movie. To say that I was confused would be a gross understatement! I walked up to the man ( I was probably around eight) and getting his attention said: "Shouldn't you be up there?" ( pointing at the TV). He looked up at the screen and his mouth quirked into a smile and said "I'm just relaxing before the next scene".
Then he laughed and explained everything to me. When he was done he asked me what I was there for. I told him about Grandma, and he took the time to talk to me for a few minutes.
I will never forget that.
I have always thought of him as one of the Greatest of the Great Generation.
