I don't see any A-36 registered to Collins

Here's a photo of Sid Smith with this a/c - more details of the conversion visible...

With Gary Norville's post deleted and no A-36 registered to Collins.
What a/c do they have and how's it registered?
Can you take a Beech A-36 data plate and put it on a NA Apache?

In this picture, the A-36A has been fitted with the "doghouse" coolant intake from a later B/C/D varient. Compare to the photos posted earlier.

My beetle has been retrofitted with a 36 HP style Doghouse fan shroud!!

Martin,

the little scoops visible in your excellent photo (!!!) seem to bear out earlier mention that the scoop was from a P-51D. IIRC, the B/C radiator fairing does not have these vents. I was wondering how much the D fairing had to be modified to make it fit the shallower wing/longeron arrangement of the earlier types? Corrections/clarifications requested!

The little scoops must be from a very late D as the D's I take care of do not have them. Those are the inlet for the fuel tank vent system. Those allow the fuel tanks to breathe. If the air isn't able to flow in to replace the fuel used the engine won't run very well. That area of the airframe is exposed to high pressure which acts to pressurize the fuel tanks to a degree. The little scoops would enhance that.

I knew it was an A-36, but had never seen any color photos before (thanks Martin!). the later style radiator fairing has me puzzled as the aircraft does not have lowered longerons like P-51B/C (note there is no "fin" on the aft wing/fuselage fillet). Could this be a fairing from one of the protoype XP-51's??? If it is a later fairing, is there a slight angular difference at the front? the fit at rear seems to be ok. I would thing that it would have to be trimed so that the lip was not 3" lower, as it was for P-51B/C/D, etc.

I think it is the original fairing as shown before the doghouse/scoop mod.
