I have flown AN-2s,and Hueys, and I can say that flying the AN-2 is about like flying the Stearman, only no so sporty and blindingly fast. I would take the Huey with a door gunner with a pellet gun, over the AN-2. There are much cheaper and more effective ways to committ suicide, than flying that goliath box-kite in combat.

Guys, Read the fantastic book "The Ravens" by Christopher Robbins... has that story and many, many more.
I have been talking about this book for ages. I ran into a raven a fwe years ago. He was shocked that anyone knew about them, didn't know there was a book out. Wish I could remember his name. He went home and came back the next day with a little pin that had a rave on it, with scroll work beneath taht said RAVENS...I believe I still have it somewhere.

Thanks for posting that Jase! Does your father have any pics of the AN-2 that was recovered? I just came across the below photo, I'd love to see any your father might have!

On a side note, we've been kicking around the idea of going after an AN-2 if we can find one available as a donation. (you can probably guess where this is going!) I hear the FAA doesn't exactly like these old monsters though

My spin instructor was a Raven - still alive and well here near San Antonio.

I have heard of a an Iranian Cobra pilot that claimed at least five aerial victories over the Iraquis back in the 1970s-80s. I have also heard of a Kurdish helo pilot who defected from one or the other nation, Iran or Iraq, and also claimed aerial kills against his former service. Unfortunately there is no way to verify these claims.

I enjoyed reading about the first CIA air to air kill it was very informitive. I know little about these thing as I am ex-Navy so we did not see land very much, but I seem to remember hearing about an Air-America pilot in a T-28 shooting down an NVAF Mig-17. Is this just a sea story or what?
