One plane that I was reminded of in another recent post on WIX is the early B-17 (The one that had no tail gunner). I know next to nothing about that model and am interested to learn more. I am sure there are a few people on here that could teach me about them, so to "you" I request some basic facts about them.

Are there any of those "early" B-17's around? Any parts? Any pieces?

The more I think about it, the more I get the feeling that early WWII airplanes were generally dismantled/destroyed in order to make way for newer faster, better warplanes not even considering the older planes to be potential museum pieces. I think only once the war was over did they even consider the idea of preserving them.

Thinking about the Peashooter, those cool old F3F's, the Gloster Gladiator, Hurricanes, Yales, Stranraers, early Mark Spitfires, Fairey Battles, Swordfish, Handley Page Hampdens, early Yaks and Ilyusians (probably spelled wrong)... etc, etc... I wonder where they all are. Of course of the ones mentioned there are a small handful of them or maybe just one... but there used to be quite a few.

Where'd they all go?

Cheers,

David

I always wished that somehow a Martin B-10 would be brought back to the skies... goofy looking plane, but it always had a soft spot in my heart.

I would absoultely love to have an AT-9 Curtiss Jeep. Very cool looking and strikes me as a transitional design.

And as I have said ad nauseum in other threads, I want a Martin Mauler to go with my SPAD.

The first picture is not a P-35. It's a AT-12 Guardsmen.

I sit corrected, Nathan. You are correct, it's the AT-12, which is just a P-35 with another seat for us photographers. ;)

Good point. :D

I'm 21 years old. Even I know what a AT-12 is.

21? Well then, I won't defend you any more! :P
From now on I'll just consider myself standing shoulder to shoulder like any good grunt would do in a barfight!

I'm amazed that AT-12 survives to this day.

Ditto, Is it completely authentic, or is still somewhat modified with the cockpit?

Also when the He11 is Week's gonna get his example up in the air?!

I was able to take about a mili-second to look at it, as we passed by the hanger on the little "trolley tour". It looked pretty complete then. '

The oldest surviving known B-17 is a D model in the Smithsonian... Swoose. I just took a tour of the 2nd oldest, the Desert Rat here in IL. It's an E model. I was super excited to hear that they are converting her from a transport to her delivery configuration in '41, ala Ol' 927. Imagine seeing an early war B-17 parked next to Ol' 927. I can't wait!

My work with Ol'927 has given me a new appreciation for early war aircraft. I am in love with the P-40B and Glacier Girl. I hope to see them all in formation some day! 8)

I don't think the Swoose is going to fly. The cloest thing is a B-17E model. But an E model is an early war model too so it would work out great! I would appreciate updates on that B-17E restoration. Is it going to be a flyer?

Is there ever a chance to get these following aircraft to fly together for a photo shoot?

-Chino's P-26 and AT-12.
-P-38F Glacier Girl.
-P-40B Pearl Harbor.
-P-40E "Col. Scott markings".
-B-24A Ol' 927.
-And maybe a USAAC blue and yellow stearman.
-And a Kelly's field AT-6 with yellow and white stripped cowling.

How cool would this be?

I would also like to see a O-46, O-47, O-49, O-52 fly, AT-9, BT-13 straight model, BT-9, BT-14, AT-6A, B-18A Bolo, B-23 Dragon, and a DB-7 Havoc. How cool would it be? :D :prayer: :prayer:

Right. Didn't mean to imply that it would. Sorry.

NATHAN!!! What you don't want to see an AT-10? Now that would be really cool.
