I have a question for you jet types out there...what is the deal with the #2 engine on the B-1 in those two pictures? Looks like it's not doing much. Is the position of the "turkey feathers" (I think that's what you call them) an indication that the engine is not operating?

I believe that this was the same B-1 we had over the weekend do the fly-bys at Millville, NJ. If it is the same one, we didn't have any engine afterburners out when I saw it fly.
If the igniters went bad it could be the engine just won't go into afterburner. We've had the F-15 Demo guys have temporary loss of AB during their demos. They are usually able to get a re-light.
As far as the B-1 goes, it's hard to say if it's developing any power at all. It could be that the photo was taken as the burners were lit and number 3 was just late in getting going. I've seen that happen many times. The timing for full AB for all 4 might be a little off.

Does the closed position of the tailpipe indicate anything, or is that just where it's supposed to be for an afterburner ignition?

Heh...In that picture it looks like the B-17 is coming up on a perfect "gun run" at the Lanc.
