Don't suppose you could go big?

How about a Caribou? Harpoon? or that B-23 just sitting at the main CAF headquarters?

I don't know what red tape is involved in this, but its just a suggestion.

Gunner - You have a problem with pseudo-authentic markings?

I have always like Navions, and the mid-80's AZ CAF Wing Leader had private one nicely done as a L-17. There is a local one here with a Tiara engine no less! I'll keep it in mind, but guns and rockets are much more marketable on the airshow circuit.

War Bird Kid - we already have a rather "expensive to fly" TBM. The idea is not to go into the trash hauling business, but just carry a couple more members to help out and a few more boxes of stuff to sell at airshows in order to buy enough gas to get home! Most of the cargo aircraft are having a real tough time marketing out there. We don't have any deep pockets to pick up losses when we go out. That's exactly why Diamond Lil is going back to being a REAL bomber. The CAF B-23 could be a real sweet airplane for the right person - and is offered for sale!

That is not a T-41. The Government did not buy any 172's without the rear windows. No T-41 ever had 100LL as the fuel in the data block.

Thats just as much as a warbird as buying a civillian Ercoupe, and putting a warbug paint job on it. I think that there are more "YO-55's" flying around now that were originally built.

There is nothing wrong with a replica, just don't try to push it off as an original, especially in a museum environment.

Contact the OV-10 Bronco Association. Once of their members has a U-17 for sale.

Cheers!

A C-195/LC-126 would be a great aircraft in the desired mission, besides a sweet sounding engine.

I have about 100 hours in a C-195, and while I probably fit the description of an "average" pilot, I did have about 400 hours of taildragger time under my belt when I flew it (Luscombe, Stearman, Champ, etc.). While it can be done, I would not recommend it as a transition trainer for taildragger conversion training. I don't consider it easy to fly as far as civilian taildraggers are concerned. They are relatively fast (140 knots cross country), economical (14.5 GPH), can carry a load, and easy to maintain. Prices are up though, you might find a decent L-19 for about the same price that is more universally recognizable as a warbird/warbug. I agree with the comment that a Navion/L-17 would fit your goals well.

bdk - I concur that a Navion/L-17 would be fine - do you know of any available outside the usual Trade-A-Plane etc. venues?

k5dh - (de WA7DXQ) I sent an e-mail to Mike Whaley. If it is the U-17 that West Saunders has for sale, then that is the (perfect) one which gave me the orginal idea, but West needs to sell it, not donate it, for funding another project he is working on.

n5151ts - ok. So where is it, and who owns it, and how do I contact them?

(All above) Thank you for your help! It takes just one lead to make this happen.

Yes, it is West's airplane that I was referring to. Nice ship!

If you want to see how great a LC-126 can look check out Mike Barron's example: http://www.barronaviation.com/Default.aspx?tabid=125
They've got a (stupid) flash player so you have to scroll toward the middle of the gallery, but you'll know it when you see it.
Also look at: http://www.cessna195.org/classic/articl ... ary%201950
for an old Skyways article with pictures.

Barron's LC-126 paint looks great. Thanks for the link. I will keep him in mind if a 195 becomes available.

Paging Cindy! You might want to PM board member Cindy as she and her husband have recently purchased one. Maybe she knows of some others that are available.
