This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

John, et al - I should have said Gary was ineligible to answer. He knows this stuff backwards and forwards.

Yes, I have seen the occasional 8th AF bubble canopies with the built-in 'bump' for the wire roller - Claib Kinnard's 4th FG Man O' War sported one, IIRC - but of course no SCR-274/N (IIRC  ) antenna wire on the 8th AF Mustangs since the SCR-522 (mast antenna) VHF set had been standard on 8th AF fighters by Fall 1943.

So far, HJGB is perfect ...

what is the purpose of the curved structural member with the lightening holes, behind the armor plate? Is it a roll bar?

thanks

Its part of the canopy frame.

Thank you.

But what is it's purpose?

Well, depending on who you ask, I often times work at a backwards pace, so I reckon that's the same thing. :D

Saville, from what I have gathered I believe its only purpose is to add more structural integrity to the canopy framing, just like a brace, making the canopy much more rigid. The arch both serves the purpose of providing good strength, but also allows clearance over the radios and wires. It isn't found in too many restorations these days because most Mustangs sport a rear seat, and it wouldn't work.

Reading the info on the 361st FG site, it appears that this is indeed the case. They say "the remains" were used as the basis for the restoration. Wonder what little parts here and there they were able to use?

Just a look at the 64 year old crash site will answer that question!!
I looks worst than probably 44-14521 which got hit in the air with a 500# bomb  :?

 That's why I said little parts ...

I'd bet there's little sprinklings of the original all over the rebuild/restoration/fabrication, in addition to the all-important Data Plate.

in addition to the all-important Data Plate

I had one made for them at the kiosk down at the mall
The D/P has no importance just the paperwork. You can get the D/P
at the local Circle K.

Thanks guys for posting all those photos and experiences. It's a certain hell not being able to be there and argue over which is the best Mustang.
It's like when as a kid, we argued over which Charlie's Angel is the hottest! No one has even noticed the other Grand Champion contenders lurking around that don't happen to be P-51's. I feel sorry for those 18 judges that decide who goes home with the big trophies !
