I'm sure this is where the idea came from. They just needed to finish it off with some markings! I think it is a very attractive scheme none the less.

For sure ,this is the first photo of an Invader I've seen in this type of colors.
I only remember searching a day for the registration of this A-26.

Warbirds in civvies were not common in Australia due to the ban regarding the civil registration of ex military aircraft except in certain circumstances. Today, of course, this situation has changed dramatically

Image
CAC Mustang VH-BOY was operated by Chieftan Flying Services in the 1970's as a target tug under contract to the Australian military. It was impounded by Australian Customs after an attempt to export it without a permit and was given to the RAAF Museum which swapped it for an SE 5 and Avro 504 replicas.
Image
Lockheed Hudson VH-AGP was one of a number operated by Adastra Aerial Surveys. The aircraft was eventually sold to the Australian War Memorial where it remains today.
Image
CAC Mustang VH-IVI was one of several registered in the 1970's after the Australian Dept of Civil Aviation slipped up and granted a Mustang a full C of A. After that the precedent was set. The aircraft was destryed in a fatal crash.
Image
This CAC Wirraway was registered in a special category to allow it to be flown as a familiarisation trainer for the CAC Ceres crop duster program. The Ceres was developed from the Wirraway. Instead of the standard VH registration the aircraft carried a registration consisting of its model designation followed by its constructors number.

Thanks for sharing those Keith, very interesting. I find the Hudson to be quite attractive in those colors. Sure wish there were a few more of them around in flying condition!

I believe the L-18 is the same one Carlisle 1926 is converting from Hurricane wreckage into a travel trailer in the retro Hangar postings. The O-2 N 7148Y comes up as canceled in 2003 from a PIPER PA-30 that crashed, it reminds me of the DEA pushmepullyou that sat on tie down @ Lake Front Airport in New Orleans back in the late 70's and flew occasionally, usually carrying two guys in Robert Hall suits and carrying several long, flat, black fiberglass hard cases, but I can't believe my government would try to hood wink me  -The PIPER PA-23 APACHE, N 914TY is a GERONIMO conversion that added via kits, increased horsepower 2X160 HP v.2X150 hp which allowed a slightly less steep descent to where you were going to land if you lost an engine vs. the 150 horse engine, several airframe conversion parts to add lateral stability, more baggage access, etc. several were sold, not so many completed.

Yets, it is the same L-18. The wings and tail had been
moved to the Sport Fliers hangar of the then owner, some years ago.

Saludos,

Tulio

Is it real O-2?
It has prop spinners which O-2As didn't have...I can't tell if it has hardpoints which would ID a real O-2A.

Spinners aren't any challenge to install, cutting and installing that peek-a-boo window in the door and toe kick isn't worth the effort or money for simple 'eye wash' effect plus good luck finding the internal doubler to stiffen up the area and hold the glazing in the toe kick area, and this one has some sort of speaker installed in the bag door.
The one I used to see @ Lake Front had the hardpoint areas patched over and when you looked in the windows it was 100% military.

G'day Keith,

I've been hoping to see some more colour shots of Aussie warbirds in civvies. Thank you. To me, the scheme on VH-BOY is just about perfect, right down to the reflective paint on the canopy. Gotta watch that good Aussie sun!

I once had a slide of the blue Wirraway, but didn't know the story until now. Mystery solved!

Cheers,
Matt

Of note to me, way back then, the Aussie's were installing P-63 brakes on their civvie Mustangs.
(per the 1970s VH-BOY and VH-IVI pix)
Interesting...................
