I met him briefly at the 2003 Dayton airshow, seemed to be a very nice man. He had a passion for aviation and spaceflight. Very sad news and sad day for me.

I met him at the opening of the Doolittle Raiders display at the USAFM back in '73 or'74. He was just standing in the back of the hall watching the ceremony like everybody else.

Its sad that supposedly serious News Broadcasters don't review and edit material they put to air to the scrutiny newspapers once did, and could make such a mistake?

Its also pity that this thread has a typo in his name as well, (Neil Arms"R"tong) - hopefully a Mod can correct it?

He is deserving of our respect.

RIP - Neil Armstrong - Rest in Peace

regards

Mark Pilkington

The next carrier should be named for him instead of a so-so President. Armstrong class sounds a lot better than Gerald R. Ford class anyway.

Navy pilot, test pilot, flew the X-15, Commander of Gemini 8, Commander of Apollo 11, Professor and engineer. The first person to set foot on another world. His importance in history will only grow in time. This country owes him a debt of gratitude for his service. Goodbye Neil Armstrong. RIP

Mods - how about merging the Armstrong Gone West thread for now and an eventual move to the Gone West section?
