Historical first in aviation, this idiot was part of a ramp move crew and managed to become the first person I'm aware of to be run down by an airplane while texting.

I have very intimate knowledge of this, and while I can't say much, It was a sad chain of events. People who work around these aircraft cannot get complacent. Any aircraft, even ones with out engines or any kind of power on the (such as the 787 involved in the accident), can kill you. We did a safety stand down in our stall yesterday at the request of several coworkers and myself to review our procedures. It was a good idea to freshen up on items like that.

I feel bad for the guy and his family.

Anyone who knows me,ether personally or via my postings here knows that I never stop preaching safety every aspect aviation because ANYTHING can hurt or kill you.
In this case it proves that people are to addicted to electronic toys, and I fail to understand why anyone would want a second by second description of what you are doing every second of every day, unless we have bred a race of insecure self promoters. I've always looked at getting in the car or on the bike as a welcome relief from never ending phone calls. I take my phone with me as a safety issue, but avoid getting on it just to hear my lips flap, I carry it because there aren't any more phone booths and darned few public phones any more.

His actions were a danger to everyone working with him and show an aboslute lack of understanding of the dangers a issues involved, not to mention potential damages to a multi million dollar aircraft, so in my book that makes him an idiot and a candidate for doing a Darwin on himself.

I used to be a hardass and laugh at people like this too. It's easy to look down on people who screw up and act disgusted as if it coudln't happen to you. Then I realized that the only difference between me and them was ONE mistake. And I make mistakes on a daily basis. I speed when I forget to take my foot off the accelorator. Did it last week and a cop flashed his headlights at me instead of pulling me over. Nice guy huh? I screw with the radio when I should be watching the road. I don't study as hard as I should really study and I don't get all A's like I could as a result. I turn my underwear inside out sometimes and wear them two days in a row. I don't know anyone who doesn't screw up now and then. It's called being human. Compassion doesn't cost a thing. Being a hardass however, cost me my wife, several jobs, my health, and plenty of good friends. Of course, that's just me. :drink3:

I for one appreciate your caution! Give me your bosses/supervisors number and I'll call first thing tomorrow to tell him he as a good man with safety first under his belt. :drink3:

I'm going to swim against the flow here. I often send a text once I'm safely up at Cruise, and all is squared away, advising my actual ETA, rather than the usually over-optomistic one I started the day with.

@ FL 350 indicating 350 with EIFIS engaged so you know to the second what your ETA will be and channels 'A' and 'B' on, two additional sets of eyeballs and TCAS engaged is somewhat different than the average BOZO in a 6 year old Chevy in city traffic or someone walking along not doing his job correctly by being distracted or a harried mom in a Mommybox with three screaming crumb crushing ankle biters.

I propose a safety thread, one that can be seen in all of the forum links. Safety is not just for warbirds its for all aspects of aviation!
