Usually I hate the end of Summer but this brightens things up a lot! The CWH Lanc is coming back to FRG Republic Airport Labor Day Weekend! The American Airpower Museum is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

In addition to the Lanc they have confirmed Jim Beasley's Mk18 and Tom Duffy's Mk9. We spoke to Tom at Geneseo this year and he also confirmed this for us. Now the AAM depending on funding, is also planning +2 more surprises of a British nature it is rumored. They will not say until it is confirmed however. I will update everyone as soon as I hear something.

Come on out to Republic on Long Island and support the AAM! :drinkers:

Well if it's British, and on the east coast, the chances are that it would be the Fighter Factory's Spit.IX and Hurricane XII... just a guess. A less likely possibility would be the Russell Group aircraft. Sounds like fun though!

Cheers,
Richard

Just a reality check here...

Surely it will be a grand thing to see the Lanc touch down at FRG once more accompanied by a pair of Spits to mark the 70th anniversary of when "The Few" prevailed. I'll lead the charge in thinking positive thoughts sponsors can be convinced this is indeed a worthy cause to be embraced. 'Tis far from a done deal, but hope springs eternal.

Here's hoping!

Anyone have any inside gen on details of this event, such as, is there a schedule for any flying activities? AAM's website as usual is glitzy but not very informative. I'm especially interested in Friday the 3rd, the day I might to be able to make it out there. Are the Lanc and both Spits due in that day?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi August,

Yes I have the same questions myself. There are a few people on other boards that I will try to get this info out of and pass it along, as they are active with the AAM. I'm hoping that there is a flying program. However if I had to put money on it, the Lanc will probably be static and open for tours, the Spits...well that would depend on what the pilots plan on doing for the weekend. Will Tom Duffy (or which ever pilot in his place) or Jim Beasley hang around to fly? Maybe Jim will chime in?

In any case there definately will be flying as the AAM always sends there fleet up, also Chris B in his Mustang is a regular.

Thanks Pete, I'd appreciate any info you can pass on. I gather from Pat's post that you're one of those guys at the approach end of 19 for these things? I generally hang out in the museum's little viewing corral, but the elbow room can get a little tight there. Maybe I'll try the runway this time.

OK, August if you can get there Friday it appears to be a good day. This is from AAM photog Fred Miller:

Update... There will be formation flights on Friday with the 2 spits and Lancaster as well as some Museum aircraft in the formation for a second flyby. The only thing I can confirm flying Sat is the C-47. I am sure more aircraft will fly Sat but the real day to be there will be Friday. I am changing my above statement to say FRIDAY is the day you want to be there if you can only go one day.

The full release

70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain to be observed on LI with

RAF Spitfires and a four engine Lancaster flying at the
American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport

Calling all Long Islanders whose families survived the Blitz

All Labor Day weekend, the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, when Nazi and British fighters fought over the future of freedom, two rare RAF Spitfires and a heavy four engine Lancaster bomber will take to the air over the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport to mark ceremonies that will include remarks by British Acting Consul-General Dominic Meiklejohn and welcoming British expats who are now proud Long Islanders remembering the deadly Blitz by Nazi bombers during World War II.

Following their salute flight, the RAF aircraft will be joined by American fighters that were later flown by British pilots and, together, helped turn the tide of war in Europe and the Pacific.

“The significance of this anniversary is simple for every American. Seventy years ago this summer, our very civilization stood on the edge of a horrible abyss. If Britain had fallen to the Nazis, it would have been virtually impossible for the United States to land on occupied European soil and roll back the Third Reich,” explained American Airpower Museum president Jeff Clyman. “It was the Spitfire, and its stable mate, the Hurricane, that rose to the defense of London and thereby saved humanity from the Nazis. We need to understand our history and heed those lessons today.”

Museum Vice President Jim Vocell said, “We are looking to welcome the families of British expats now living on Long Island who experienced the Battle of Britain as soldiers, airmen or sailors. In addition, we are looking for firsthand accounts from those who were in Britain as children, then immigrated here to the States. These are all valuable oral histories that become part of the fabric of fighting for freedom.”

Hensley Murray, a longtime volunteer at the American Airpower Museum, was a child in Glasgow, Scotland whose industrial area, Clydebank, took a terrible pounding from Luftwaffe bombers because of its role as an industrial center. Some 12,000 homes were destroyed or damaged and, at one point during the aerial assault, over 500 people were killed within two nights.

“London was better known as a target for Nazi bombers during the Blitz, but other cities also suffered terribly, including Belfast, Manchester, Plymouth and Coventry. Those of us who lived through it won’t forget it, and this anniversary cannot pass without every Long Islander understanding what was at stake,” offered Murray.

Labor Day Weekend’s Battle of Britain program at the American Airpower Museum will be held from Friday, September 3rd through Monday, September 6th, between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Gate donations will be requested, $15 for adults, $10, for seniors and veterans and $5 for children. Flight and armor experiences will also be available. The museum’s web site is www.americanairpowermuseum.com

Word from AAM HQ-

Guys Hurricane Earl is looking to cause some issues for the kickoff for the weekend but we are hoping for the best.

Friday at Noon is currently scheduled for the Battle of Britain Tribute kick off with visiting VIPs from the British Consulate in NYC. If weather allows we should have at minimum the Spitfire/s in the air for this event. The Lancaster is expected early afternoon Friday and we are hoping to include it in Fridays events.

Otherwise weather dependent expect constant ops throughout Saturday and Sunday. Our C-47 will be flying most likely twice during each day. The spitfires will hopefully fly twice and the Lancaster and Spit/Spits will fly once each day in the afternoon most likely. Expect a better hack at a schedule by Thursday when we have a better idea on the weather. In addition our aircraft collection will also be flying throughout the day and we have T-6 and Waco rides available both days.

Hope to have you all out there with us.

Cheers,
Buster

Latest update from the American Airpower Museum HQ-

Thankfully it appears that Hurricane Earl will not be as much an impact as we thought. That being said we have still had to prepare for the worst and currently have just about everything we can fit in the hanger tucked away. As a result we will be opening the doors once again on saturday at 1200 noon so that we can have the morning to clean up the aftermath of storm effects if needed and set up our displays again.

Currently based on improving weather we are to expect the arrival of at least one Spitfire and the Lancaster around 1200 noon on Saturday 4 Sept. The only thing that might change the arrival is the forcasted high winds on Long Island gusting up to 30 knots. This may impact the arrival of the light weight Spitfire and can possibly delay the Lancaster.

We are crossing our fingers and will do our best to update everyone as soon as we get higher fidelity information both on weather and aircraft schedules.

You can also see these updates on Facebook, and our web site www.Americanairpowermuseum.com or .org although I will say that the most up to date information will be either here or on Facebook.

attached is a photo of the Lancaster visiting us a few years ago, we hope to see the same sight tomorrow!

Thanks and hope to see y'all there,
Buster
