Not everyday someone can get a AD-1 Skyraider 1947 production model to fly.

Very rare indeed well done.

I do hope she loose the USAF colour scheme tho as that is wrong very very wrong needs to be USN gloos dark blue and markings.

You can see its a AD-1 by the very angular canopy.

This was Walt Newton's Skyraider. The paint wasn't in too bad of condition and we knew it wouldn't be correct to an AD-1, but we wanted to honor our Vietnam Vets and we really liked the 3 color camo paint. It is a monster of an airplane and the 3350 lives up to the reputation of oil slinging. We find ourselves sliding off the wing just trying to clean the oily beast up. We have a few Airshows on our schedule that we plan on bringing the Skyraider to. Stop on by and check the beast out!

Thunder over Michigan is tentatively on our schedule. We'd like to put more pylons on and ordinance, but we need to finish the A4 and get it home. David

Question:

Isn't there something like the Darton kit for the 3350, that would help control the oil?

I seem to recall that having been a problem with the T-28 engines (not same model engine as the AD-1) and the kit basically solved this?

The paint scheme was chosen by the owner. It is as close to the original as we could get with just a picture or two to go by. The paint work was done by Russ Ellis and his son Russell in Ottowa Il. They did a fantastic job with the paint. Hats off to the both of them and their crew for the outstanding work.

Very nice. My friend is an original member of the 6th. I collect as many USAF A-1 photos as I can find, particularly of the 6th and could have supplied more photos and reference material.

The 6th's official tail code was "ET" but their dedicated alert detachment at, I believe Da Nang, used the code "6T". You can see where some of early airplanes had the E converted to a 6, whereas the later ones it is clearly a 6.

Great unit, real American heroes, just less known than some of the more photographed units over at NKP.

We still have a little room at the Foundation. If we want to fly the one in the back, it will just take a little longer to get it out. This airplane looks really good in the camo colors. Pictures just don't do it justice. It's also pretty cool to hear it run.

Tulio, I'm not sure about the Darton kit for the 3350. I'm sure someone here knows if there is one or not. We have the kit on our T28.

IIRC what was on the AD-4s that were at Chino back in the early 90's was a sump pump that sucked oil out of the sump after shut down and an electric gate valve on the oil line from the oil tank. On shut down close the valve and then run the pump to scavenge the oil from the sump. Before start scavenge again, open the shutoff valve and start up. Pumps less oil and lessens the liquid lock possibilities. The Darton kit for T-28s also runs lines to lowest points of exhaust pipes and intake port on the lower cylinders as well.
