Difference Between A Radial Engine And A Jet Engine
>>
> Round engines are commonly known as Radial engines. The piston Jugs are > placed in a circle. Hence "Round" engines. Turbine engines are known as Jet engines. We gotta get rid of those turbines, they're ruining aviation and our hearing.
>>
> A turbine is too simple minded, it has no mystery. The air travels through it in a straight line and doesn't pick up any of the pungent fragrance of engine oil or pilot sweat. Anybody can start a turbine. You just need to move a switch from "OFF" to "START" and then remember to move it back to "ON" after a while. My PC is harder to start.
>>
Cranking a round engine requires skill, finesse and style. You have to
seduce it into starting. It's like waking up a mistress On some planes,
the pilots aren't even allowed to do it. Turbines start by whining for a
while, then give a lady-like poof and start whining a little louder.
>>
Round engines give a satisfying rattle-rattle, click-click, BANG, more
rattles, another BANG, a big macho FART or two, more clicks, a lot more
smoke and finally a serious low pitched roar. We like that. It's a GUY
thing.
>>
When you start a round engine, your mind is engaged and you can concentrate on the flight ahead. Starting > turbine is like flicking on a ceiling fan:
> Useful, but, hardly exciting.
>>
When you have started his round engine successfully your Crew Chief looks up at you like he'd let you kiss his girl, too! Turbines don't break or
catch fire often enough, which leads to aircrew boredom, complacency and inattention. A round engine at speed looks and sounds like it's going to
blow any minute. This helps concentrate the mind.
>>
Turbines don't have enough control levers or gauges to keep a pilot's
attention. There's nothing to fiddle with during long flights. Turbines
smell like a Boy Scout camp full of Coleman Lamps. Round engines smell like God intended machines to smell.
>>
Pass this on to an old WWII guy (or his son, or anyone who ever flew them) in remembrance of the "Greatest Generation".

From my (Jet) engine instructor. "Why are round engines round? So you can ROLL them to the dump."

What is the difference between a Radial and a Jet engine ? Easy, a Radial is a engine, a jet is a dog whistle on steriods

Thanks, Lightninglover, after reading that I understand the first part of this year better.

If it weren't for the round motors used in WWII, that wise guy likely would have been making his comments in either Japanese or German.

But you can also roll a jet engine to the dump too.

Try that with an inline or horizontally opposed engine!

Yah, and they roll a whole lot easier, too!

...and the major difference between a jet engine and an airline Captain is..once you get to the gate it is possible to make a jet engine stop whinning.....

One more thing about radials, on some aircraft, the pilot isn't even allowed to start the engines! 8)

:D Do you mean smokey radial engine start as in like this T-28 cranking up at Watts Bridge.

I bet there isn't a mosquito in a 500 meter radius though.

Thu Oct 23, 2008 12:36 am

:D No mosquitos at all that weekend. Does it have the same effect on flying ants? There were millions of them though. Every time I returned to my car a few thousand more flew into the boot when I opened it to put something away or get something out. I hate flying ants. Yeeeeecchhh!!!!!

Good one .... we hereat Pratt & Whitney that use to work on radials call jet engines LEAF BLOWERS.

Best description of how a jet engine works: " just take a look at how a squid swims"

:D On the other hand there's the difference between what I posted above and this. This is a P&W R-985 in a Winjeel.

Only a couple of tiny puffs of smoke, a few small clicks and rattles, one bang, a little fart then the engine is running smoothly.

Ross.
