Quite.
"Today you will fly the P-61. You are on a night fighter task. Opportunities to attack ground targets with highly inaccurate, low-velocity, small charge ground weapons are limited. Please remove them, and do what Uncle Sam wants you here for."

No one else thinks it's odd?
Well, in this case it's a bit like deciding to add a cap-gun when you are walking around with two Colt .45s strapped to your waist. Yes, it adds something, but what?

I'm pretty sure there were a few sorties in daylight occaisionally. I know there was at least 2 kills in daylight, according to my P-61 book (Osprey). Maybe it was just an experiment. Or a bored crew chief.

Gentlemen,
I'm quite convinced the photo is from the CBI.
The 426th and 427th were the only P-61 squadrons in theater. Evidence suggests that the Widows of both squadrons were equipped with improvised bomb racks for night intruder missions, and that the 427th also used 4.5 inch rocket launchers for missions.

There's pictures of the 426th & 427th in Queen of the Midnight Skies showing them with the tubes and rockets under the wings.
