Ok, it's not exactly warbirds, but it is close, a bunch if mostly guys going very fast in ridiculously expensive machines which can be both beautiful and deadly in a moment. And some race guys are pilots and/or warbird fans.
So any race fans? Anybody going? Just wondered about the logistics. Is it sold out, or are there tickets available? I sort of have a half idea to go at the last minute. I almost went once, years ago.

I will be attending my 19th 500 (by the way I'm only 28). My Grandfather (Lt. Col. Richard K. Williams, 9AFSC, still with us at 94yrs old) has had the same tickets since 1935.
Tickets are still available (the kind of crappy ones). If you haven't been there it is something to see...and the best flys of any sporting event.
Lodging may be a little dicey this late but if you stay outside the city you can find hotels (we stay in Anderson) about an hour north west of the city.
Speaking of Anderson, if you are a race fan Anderson Speedway has the Little 500 on Saturday night at 8pm. The speedway is a 1/4 mile high banked asphalt oval and they start 11 rows of 3 USAC wingless sprint cars running 500 laps. Really something to see.
If you need any info PM me.
Regards,
Mark P.

racing is supposed to promote new ideas and make cars better, not crush initiative and thinking outside the box.

Before Na$car was ruined by Headquarters and Bruton, we used to sit in the north parking lot (anyone remember the big rock?) at Charlotte and listen to the 500 on the radio in our rental while we tailgated. Then we would wander in for the World 600 while Tony, John, Robby or whoever helicoptered into the track after finising at Indy so they could run another 600 miles. Fond memories, but it seems like it was fifty years ago. :?

Racing just isn't racing anymore.

I totally agree, though I was more of a Nascar fan than Indy-type machines. I always admired F-1, Cart, etc. for the tremendous advances in technology that could be invented. I admired Nascar for (and I'm being totally serious, here) the inventive cheating and rules-parsing that went on. Smokey Yunick, Buddy Parrot, and Junior Johnson, not to mention the Elliotts, were "creative" to the extreme.

It's ironic that the prototype for today's racing is bankrupt. Sorry IROC, the sanctioning bodies copied you too well.

Sorry to hijack, Bill.

I've been there a couple of times with the "Kinko's group. Kinko's take a large group of people there every year. Great party, not so great race anymore. IMHO

Quit bitching about Indy and wasting your time on it, and work on warbirds...

The idea of moonshining and running back roads in hand-built cars appeals to me- my Grandfather did it in the 20's and 30's when he wasn't flying an Alexander Eaglerock. What we have today is like perfumed major-league sports, and just as dull.

NASCAR has pushed all the long time fans away. Been watching loyally since 1988 until this year. Haven't watched one race yet. It's not even fun or entertaining anymore. Not to mention how every week they have to talk about what a push, or lose means. Don't see NFL broadcasts explaining what a first down is every week.
I could rant forever...but at least the flyovers are still good.

NASCAR does now too. All the 2008 Chevfordogoyta's have them
