I've got to disagree, the poster boy of fighter pilots is the overhead shot of steely eyed, Col Don Blakeslee sitting in his Mustang looking up at the camera.

As well as Boyington one of America's highest scoring aces, and Yeager the first pilot to break the soundbarrier in level flight, and the most famous living pilot.
