New built Hawker Typhoon

Sun Nov 18, 2007 6:09 pm

I know there was a thread on Typhoon's a while ago, but to build a full scale flying example would cost what? ... any ideas on costs for such an undertaking. I would love to see one flying. Maybe the exact specs on the airframe, but possibly with an avaliable engine that would fit the frame. Keep thinking about these 262's and 190's being built. There's so many great aircraft from WW2 that would be great to have at least one in the air.

Put another engine in it and it wouldn't be a Typhoon. :(

close enough

Sun Nov 18, 2007 7:33 pm

Not really. Why bother to go to all the effort and $ to create something that patently isn't a Typhoon. Without 3,000 hp of Napier Sabre up the front, what do you have? Typhoon lite? Diet Typhoon? Sugar-free Hawker?

Seems there's a couple of zero's out there with B-25 engines in them, sorry tough guy, forget I brought it up. Feel better now ... lolol

Actually they are DC-3 engines, not B-25 engines. The Russian Zero replica's (all 3) were rebuilt with R-1830-92 engines, not the R-2600 that the B-25 has. AFAIK, the only Zero rebuilt with a B-25 engine was the Frankenstein model that Bob Diemert rebuilt in Canada in the 70's with the B-25 QEC on it. I believe that is the same Zero that was rebuilt by Black Shadow Aviation and is now at the Naval Museum in Pensacola. AFAIK, it was rebuilt to Mitsubishi spec's or close to it.

I just wanted to set the record straight, but I understand your point! :D

The DIEmert Val had the B-25 QEC. I think the DIEmert Zero had an 1830 as well.

Yes, the Diemert Val did have a B-25 QEC as well as one of the Zero's. The Zero only made one test flight, I believe in about 1976 or so and nearly crashed due to C.G. problems. I have a picture of it in an old issue of the C.A.F. Dispatch magazine from the late 70's or early 80's. It looked very unusual because it had the larger, oversized cowling, engine and QEC from a R-2600. It appeared very much out of place due to the larger dimensions of the B-25 engine than the 1830 powered ones.

Brandon, you are thinking of the CAF's example, which DID in fact have the standard -92 DC-3 engine. This is the one that was sold to the Pacific Aviation Museum at Pearl Harbor.

Yes, but that's replacing a like for like in type - a radial for a similar size radial, as in the FlugWerke 190's, or the the Allison V-12 in place of the Klimov V-12 in those Russian Yak replica's from a few years back.

There isn't any H-24 configuration engine that you could use for a like vs like install in a Tiffie/Tempest replica, and without that, as Mike says....what's the point.

I agree - the engine is such a defining characteristic of the Typhoon that replacing it would render the project pretty pointless.

Looks like We'd better hurry up with those repro Typhoons!! ... Digger

Die Tuefel Panzer..

Yeah heard that a while ago.Wouldn,t mind one though..With a Tiffie the biggest stumbling block is the Sabre.Nothing else would come close.Only thing we could wish for (please, please, please)is the Brooker Museums Tempest be finished to ground run status.Tom,you reading this... :D
Oh great work on the Spit by the way...

Hey OK I get all your points, I just thought I would ask what some of you guys thought about the distant, far-fetched idea would be. Insults are only from losers ... So ease up on the insulting PM's. You know who you are and I don't know who you are, so like I said, all you have to say is the thought of building a Typhoon would not work, but sending me insulting PM's is not cool at all. What kind of idiots we got here? ... why not just post your PM insults here for everyone to read so all the good folks can see what losers you are. Grow up kids. I guess I should just never post anymore for fear of insulting you guys who would think I'm just too stupid. Real nice .... have a great day ... L

Hellcat...Gotta' agree with you about the insulting PMs. Only a wuss who's afraid to voice his/her opinion in open forum would do that.
I also must say that a Typhoon (even without a Sabre) would be a pretty sight. I don't think it would be worth the $$$ just for a cosmetic replica though.

Mudge the aesthete
