I made my annual pilgrimage yesterday, to LSFM.

On my way, I stopped at Arcola, where I saw the LSFM's B-25 being readied for new paint:

I would publish new photos from the LSFM, but basically what they had there last year, was there this year.

And the Rube Goldberg (sp?) aircraft on the main lobby is not working anymore.

Saludos,

Tulio

What are the new colors for this aircraft going to be. I know it is the wrong model, but it would be great to see one get finished as the Ruptured Duck. I don't know of any B-25's that fly with these markings on it.

Its not the "Duck", but it will be refinished to resemble the Doolittle Raiders 1942 scheme.

Edited--Apparently she WILL be getting an entirely new scheme. Hopefully, she stays known as Delivery.

Skymaster, whats the status on the Hurri's paint job?

Tulio, if you had been around Hobby between 10 and 11 yesterday morning, you would've caught the B-25 "Pacific Prowler" at MillionAire. They left a little before 11. I had to run up to our old shop for work and was definately surprised to see her sitting there.

What variant is that? I would assume it's a "J," but that astrodome and windows aft of the flight deck make it look like an earlier model.

BTW, how is the work on the Privateer coming?

The museum doesn' t seem to be mainting and updating their website. They still show the Hurricane in Colorado and it was finished last Spring except for paint. Anyone know? The LSFM airshow is one I always try to make in the Spring after Sun n Fun.

From my conversations with the maintenance guys at LSFM, the Hurricane is not progressing at a stellar rate. Slower than molasses in January comes to mind.

I have heard that the current plan is to maintain the Special Delivery name along with a scheme that pays tribute to the Doolittle raiders. It is my understanding that most of the raiders had minimal, if any markings. so it is tough to come up with a true Doolitlle scheme that is marketable to the general public. While folks on this board appreciate the accurate stuff- that does not always appeal to the mass market, a necessary evil in this age of rising insurance and avgass prices to keep them in the air.

Hurricane is indeed progressing slowly= mainly due to the desire to get it perfect on the part of the person doing the work. Lots of unique fastners and many panels to be removed and worked on= hopefully when it is done it will be show stopper.

Yes-work on teh PB4y is going slowly. Right now the main focus has been on keeping the flyers in shape - of course if anyone out there would like to donate a few bucks I am sure that help speed up things :D

The Airplane model in the Lobby does indeed still work, they just don't run it all the time. Makes quiet a bit of racket if you have to sit under it all day

Don't forget - Spirit of flight airshow at LSFM last weekend in April

Ryan,

I have been meaning to go to Hobby for a very long time now; I thought that I could see something at the Collings Foundation, but I was told that do not keep anything there that could be open to someone like me (read: airport bum).

Connery, I hope these will be good to satisfy your interest.

Steve S.: Thank you for the explanation. I saw the contraption not working as usual (well, as usual as once a year visit would be) and saw it a little dirty, so I assumed (remember Tulio, never assume . . .) that it was out of order. My most definitely bad : )

Tulio, we moved everything over to Ellington several years ago. The hangar we used to be in was torn down along with the original 147 FIG hangar due to Hobby Airport expansion.

Everything will be open when the 17,24,25 come to town in March.

Here are some poor scans of slides I took of LSFM's B-25 wearing her "first" warbird paint job. She was named "Yankee Prowler" then. They are from August of 1983 at the Meriden, CT Airshow, when Dean Martin of Burlington, VT owned it.

Can't wait to see the new paint scheme.

I love the nose art she carried before, so I am not complaining. But I have good documentation that was given to me by Ellen Lawson on the nose art of the Ruptured Duck. This includes colors, and everything. I think that you could market Ruptured Duck stuff really easy. It is a shame that every B-25 out there that is painted like a Doolittle Raider is usaully painted to be Doolittle's. There were some nose art carried on the raider's aircraft. There was Hari-Kari, TNT, Whirling Dervish, and a few others.

Jerry,
Thanks for posting pics of Dean's B-25. I still kick myself that I did not go for a ride in it when I was little.

Neat that she is going to be done up as a raider when she was part of the Yankee Raiders here in Vt and that she participated in the Doolittle reunion in Washington DC where a flight of B-25's got to fly down over the whitehouse. This was known as "30 seconds over Washington" Somewhere i have the footage from deans B-25 of the flyover............but its in Beta :(
