Dual control P-51 or TF-51 wanted

Tue Dec 12, 2006 7:11 pm

Hi, I'm brand new to this forum. Long time Swedish airshow performer, now seriously searching for a reasonably prized dual control Mustang. Any lead very much appreciated! Here, or PM wingflyer@hotmail.com

Much like unicorns, I have often heard of them but never actually seen "a reasonably priced" mustang

TF-51D

Provenance Fighter Sales has a nice one listed right now at USD$2.4 million. Here is a link to the listing:

Thanks Dean, A beautiful aircraft, but unfortunately a little beyond my price range…

P-51's go for $1,000,000+ and probably TF-51's are at the top of the price scale.

And that is a nice one.

Unfortunantly, the going price for a good TF is going to be the very high 1.0 mils to mid 2.5 mils.

Or plan B. Buy a stock D model, install the skeleton dual controls that's available, or even buy one which have them installed!

I agree- if cost is a big issue, the only way to do this at a 'reasonable' price is to purchase a standard D model privately (not from a dealer/broker) at a good price and have the conversion carried out afterwards. This will cost a lot less, in total, than the finished item is being offered at. The downside is its a lot more hassle, but if your budget is limited......

I know one P-51D for sale in Europe and I think it is not a dual control, it is on planecheck:

I agree its one of the best but that price tag has to be pretty harsh, but you wouldn't be wasting, awesome aircraft.

My suggestion would be to call Lee Lauderback at the Stallion 51 Corporation in Kissimmee, Florida. He flies p-51's everyday and probably has more dual control Mustang time than anyone and he knows all the owners and histories of aircraft that are out there.
Mark Clark at Courtesy Aircraft has bought and sold a lot of TF's and they can find whatever you want.
May I ask what your intention is for the airplane? IF you are going to do airshow aerobatics, then you will want to learn about the raised vertical fin and other features on the TF as compared to the TP-51D.
If you are going to be doing checkouts, or anticipate flying from the backseat with a less than 100% qualified pilot in the front seat, you really can't do that from just a TP-51.
The TF's run about 50% more in price than a P-51 in same condition and the TP conversion used to be about $150,000 above a non dual control P-51 in like condition. My numbers may have changed a little over the last few years.
Best of Luck!
