To protect the elevating mechanism / gearing in the turret while the tank is bouncing around as it moves from place to place on roads and cross country. That would be when enemy contact is not expected, like in the rear areas.

Same reason as long tube Artillery. I figured with the length of the barrel there wouldn't be much travel at all. We moved a howitzer about 10 feet on a hard packed parking area and the tube wasn't in travel lock. An Ordinance CW4 happened to be walking by and delivered about as good a wire brushing to my rear end as I'd ever received. Suffice to say it never happened again. :drink3:

Great period shots of a 1955 T-Bird. No fender/cowl vent and no window vent.
I had almost forgotten about the TF-102, despite having seen many when I was a kid growing up on an ADC base.
IIRC. it was the last time a two seat version of a fighter was designated a "TF".... though some early documents called the F-15B the " TF-15".
