As for Dudley, back in those days I would wager it was much easier to be an imposter.
I recall Eastern had a Capt. who had been found operating all along with a just Private certificate.
What time frame was the Eastern impostor? I remember there was one in the 1970s. He was an Ex Navy jet pilot and when he transitioned to the Airline he didn't have the civilian ratings and was put on the line with the expectation that he would get them soon. Somehow he didn't and just lied about it until finally he was upgrading to a new type and the FAA inspector offered to endorse his ticket right there. Eventually the guy did get his ratings officially and was flying night time freight the last I heard of him.

The chidding about Andy Devines 'labor saving devices' promts me point out the Willy was the consumate airman who knew his airplane very well, if you notice he is constantly adding very very teeny corrections with his little finger, to the trim all the time. Also Lloyd Nolans (Standish) radio man is old time cowboy "B" Western hero Bob Steele who was a long time pal of the Dukes-
