Actually Mudge Jack Ilfrey scored 2 kills in Europe.
In Africa he downed 5.5 but wasn't the first ace. The
title belongs to Jack's good friend Virgil Smith of the
14th FG who was KIA shortly thereafter

Sorry Jack...(and troops) Just re-read that portion of his book and you are (to no-one's surprise) correct. The book actually says "One of the first..." DUH...my bad.
