I guess I should have put this in the scrapped airtanker thread but I'm really P***** off and wanted to post a new one. The C-118 at Faclon Field in Mesa Az is in the process of being cut up by it's new owner. We used to call this plane the "Burrito Bomber" Because of it's Mexican registration number. Anyway, today they pulled the engines and control surfaces and while it sat on it's tail skid, they hacked the rear fuselage off just behind the trailing edge. The Arizona Wing of the CAF had the plane stored on their ramp for quite a while but I guess the new owner wanted his prize ASAP so it now sits on the North side of the airport being chopped up into beer cans.

The C-118 is the military version of the DC-6.

The Flying Boxcar would be the C-119 (or, of course, a C-82...)

Actually, I believe a C-82 is actually a Packet. The C-119 was the Flying Boxcar though... you were right about that.

Cheers,
Richard

I am pretty saddened of the recent scrappings of C-118's and C-54's. I guess no one really appreciates them(besides us).

XA-TDR was c/n 44633, reg changed Nov 7th to N48AW. New owner TATONDUK OUTFITTERS LTD, a well known name within the DC-6 community in Alaska. A good guess is, that XA-TDR finaly became a source of spare-parts for the worlds remainig fleet of active DC-6s.

http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/NNumSQL.asp?NNumbertxt=48AW

XA-TDR was offered for sale on eBay around May this year. There was no winning bid.

Here are a couple pictures I took with my cell phone today. They salvaged the engines, landing gear and control surfaces and cut up the rest

Did they at least save the nose? (How much are cockpits selling for nowadays? I want to talk one of my friends into buying one.)
