At noon a black F-5/T-38 did a right break for 31 here in Salem.
He came right over our place on right down wind with his
gear down. I stopped by the airport while running errands
but never saw it. Any clues to the ID??????

If its active duty it proably belongs to the U-2 boys at Beale ( red codes ) Holloman F-117 boys if it had silver codes.

Did it do any touch and go's or a full stop? If it did, then it was not a Beale or Holloman bird. At 5800', KSLE has much too short of a runway to support -38 ops. Air Force regulations require a minimum of 8000' for that. If, however, they only did an instrument/low approach, then it could have been. There is no minimum requirement for low approach's in the Air Foce. It it was a Navy bird, then all bets are off.

Did you see any tail code's?

By the time it was close enough for details it was over my head so I could only tell what it was. They weren't doing a missed approach off the ILS but rather a break into the pattern with the gear and flaps down desending and turning to base. Never in 30 years have I seen any type of military a/c even do a ILS here except the OR NG (not ANG).
I suppose it could be civilian and based here. I've been sorta scarce around the a/p for the last 6 months. Heck while I was out there I saw a Chipmunk, Stearman & O-1 that are new out there. In the old days nothing made a move out there without me knowing about it  :?

Sure it was Black?

The dark gray birds look black to me most of the time...especially in the air..

It's always the coolest jet on the ramp...right up until an F-18 or F-16 or something else rolls up. Then the FBO chickies are gone as quickly as they'd shown up.

Seemed to work out for this dude all right, though. I mean, chicks were sending him sexy text messages while he was in space for cryin' out loud...
