It's not a "detachment" per se, they just come in & out of here all the time for upgrades etc. I see them almost every day. I just happen to know some stuff

Warner Robins Air Logistics Center's Detachment 2 is the unit of which I speak. That was two years ago but my friend who commanded the detachment is now with NASA. For all I know the unit is long gone from PMD.

I was working in the tower in '88 at Patrick when a SR-71 radioed in that he had lost power and was gliding in (I thing he was over Georgia at the time). I was just a lowly airman at the time, working on the DBRITE, so I didn't know much of what was going on, until I saw it land. The emergency gear immediately surrounded the aircraft and they quickly escorted it into the hangar.

They flew a team in from Beale to effect repairs, and it flew out a few days later with a chalk palm tree drawn on the rear stabilizers. One of the Dodge K car/ SP cars playing escort got too close at the end of the runway and had the hood paint burned. There were about a dozen wrecks on A1A that afternoon from rubberneckers.

Funny stuff.
