Visit to New York during December

Hi Guys

Over the weekend of 9/10 December I shall be in New York and want to visit the musemu at Floyd Bennett Field, how easy is it to get to by public transport from Manhatten where I will be staying and does anyone have upto date contact details for it. Also any other places apart from Intrepid (which may be gone by the time I get there) worth a visit.

Tony, no I wouldnt know how to get around there, but you may wish to visit the American Airpower Museum at Republic Field on Long Island. It is located in one of the original Republic Aircraft completion hangers there on the airport. I ferried a PBY to that museum about a month ago, (first time there) and was impressed with the facility. The volunteers there were just super folks. I think you would enjoy it. They also have a website.

Also consider the Cradle of Aviation Museum at Bethpage. Located right next to Farmingdale, it focuses on Grummand and Republic products. The WWII section features an F4F, F6F, TBM, P-47N, and some less sharp-ended goodies. Good Korean and Nam selection by those two manufacturers as well. I wish I could tell you that it is easy to get to this, or Floyd Bennett, or American Airpower by public transit -- but it isn't. However they are all reasonably close to each other and it may make economic sense to rent a car for the day and hit all three.

Don't forget the Berlin Airlift Historical Association winters there aircraft at Floyd Bennett too!
The C-97 is undergoing work there to make it ready to fly on the show circut.
If you're going out as far as Calverton, there is an F-14 on display near the old Grumman Airport.
