Yep! Japan. Nice to see this one again. Slips my mind what the name of the museum is (or what city) but it's a war-memorial exhibit. This Ki84 is, alas, the only surviving example of a very fine design. She was captured and evaluated (along with another Ki84) at Clark Field in the Philippines. She ended up with the Smithsonian, being "cut loose" when the future NASM downsized its aircraft holdings in the fifties and picked up by Ed Maloney for what would become Planes of Fame (three cheers, again, to Mr M for another "rescue"). In the mid-sixties she was restored to fly with her original Homare engine (!!) and also used briefly along with one of Ed Maloney's Corsairs for an airfield scene in a war film (forget which one). Some time in the late 70s, I think, she went to Japan and ultimately joined the museum collection there where she is still displayed.

Hmm. A kind of Ki43 on steroids. Wonder if TAF would like to have a go at a short production run of Ki84s...?

I think I saw this plane on another website devoted to axis planes, Japanese planes specifically. It looks like the "Zero Museum" Zero. It was an attraction at a hotel that no longer exists, but the plane is still there, sitting outside. I'll post the link as soon as I get home. (I'm on the ole worko computero now)

Sorry guys, I shoukld have told you that I knew there was one at the Chiran Kamikaze museum in Japan. See link.

But Jean François found a link indicating that the Frank before going to Chiran was in another museum. And it is confirmed on Mikael`s site. So maybee this is an old picture taken back then.

Hi this Frank was at P.O.F. for many years! it was one of their early restorations and was sold around the time Ed sold the Helldiver and Dauntless to the C.A.F.They flew it a few times then it was sold to a private buyer in Japan It was very original and super rare!!It along with a few other rare birds were sold to keep the museum going,Im sure they have kicked them selves many times over!!Now its a ground hog forever,but at least displayed.An other Frank was reovered from the sea off the coast of Japan kinda restored/painted but you could read the news paper through all the corrosion holes in it!!It was on display but dont know where.Thanks Mike

I think the Ki-84 would be an excellent candidate for reproductions. The Ki-43 was far more prominent, but the Ki-84 signified Japan's "best" during the late war period. It was right up there with the top planes being operated by the US.

Am I correct in that it utilized a double-row radial? I wonder if an R-2800 could be used and still allow for no noticable difference in the outward appearance of the cowlings? I know the horsepower ratings should be about the same as the Ki-84s original powerplant.

Not sure but I seem to remember something about a frank at the yokosuka shrine. from somewhere that was badly corroded, very likely wrong though.
