just finished a great book "A Lonely Kind of War"

just finished "A Lonely Kind of War" by Marshall Harrison, and I have to say it was an incredible read! This may be in part due to my ignorance about Vietnam FAC activities in general (ok, besides watching BAT 21 a few times...), but anyone looking for an action-packed read should check it out; Harrison flys a Bronco throughout the novel, by the way. The writing style is fairly light and very descriptive, with some FAC missions taking up tens of pages in full detail.

For those into armor as well, I read "Tank Sergeant" by Ralph Zumbro about the same time, and it was also fantastic. Again, I was almost completely ignorant of armor operations in Vietnam before checking it out, so it was quite refreshing reading about something other than WWII combat over Europe for a change, not that there is anything wrong with that of course....Zumbro's penchant for upgrading the lethality of his tanks makes for great reading.

I would highly reccomend them both.

I agree with your report, I have read Harrisons book twice and enjoyed it both times. Those guys left it all hanging out at low speed.

May I also suggest a book by the title "The Ravens"??

I do not remember the author's name, but it covers the activities of the FACs in Laos and Cambodia....

And if you ever get a chance, get a copy of the Edgar Allan Poe's Literary Society's songbook; great stuff!

Unfortunately Harrison passed away a few years ago from cancer.

Several former FACS who flew Broncos said that Lonely Kind of War is a pretty good representation of what the Broco Driver's life was like, at times he got a little carried away.

Regardless, I thought it was a great read and gave me some insight into OV-10 operations.
