Catherine (my better half) and I stopped by the London airport on our way to Thunder Over Michigan. Of course, this was to photograph a CT-133 that had be recently mounted there. You can find the pictures in this album...

The gear is scheduled to be raised sometime soon. They have to remove the mainwheels before this can be done! Shame they didnt mount it up the tailpipe!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I saw this T-bird on the drive to Thunder Over Michigan last Friday and the gear is still down and i think it looks great that way. No real signs of messy birds unless it gets cleaned regulary

My question is what is the signifigance of removing the original tail number and markings and adding fake (and poorly applied) ones instead?

The T-Bird was put there as a memorial to 420 'City of London' Auxiliary Squadron, which operated out of London airport (then called Crumlin Airport) from 1948 to 1956. They flew Harvards, Mustangs, and later on, Silver Stars. One of which was 21491. I'm not directly involved, but I'm guessing the people involved wanted to have the T-Bird on display painted as one of the aircraft actually flown by 420 Sqn. I think no one had a picture of what 420 T-Birds were painted as, but here's what 21491 looked like while with 420.

I think it looks neat with the gear down as well, but I think the bird population might force them to raise them sometime in the future.

As for the quality of the markings, IIRC all the work was done at no charge by a local business. I don't think historical accuracy was high on their list of priorities.

The tbird was painted up as the T33 that made the final departure out of london before it closed.
