Bad picture quiz

I was reading Tulios thread about the importance of posting pictures, even bad ones, to this forum. He is absolutely right in that assesment and I am glad he brought it up. I was halfway through writing a reply to that thread when I thought that what I was doing would actully be better as it's own thread. Below is one of my many crappy photos with a list of simple (or perhaps not so simple) questions.

I encourage all of you to post pictures that you also think are crappy and ask the same questions that I do. I'm curious to see if this goes anywhere.

Now I have posted this picture before, but not recently. The picture was taken using a Kodak Instamatic camera looking through a fence. Bet you never would have guessed about the fence part huh?

What is it? (Duh, it's a B-17. Be specific)

Where was the picture taken? (What airfield. That may be impossible given the info in the photo, but I want it as a question with all subsequent pictures)

When was the picture taken? (If you know the what and the where you should be able to come close to a year)

Many of us will recognize Nine O Nine and this was clearly taken shortly post-restoration, before the turrets were on, ca. 1985-87, but I would have no guess as to the place.

I think this bad-photo thing is a great idea and I have an etiquette question. Should we add further bad photos to this thread or should we start a new thread for each bad photo (or series of related bad photos)?

I would suggest separte threads. Some of these photos are going to spawn their own discussions.

There was a question about the airfield where the photo was taken. Anyone?

(Not a wild guess, reallly. I've got a similar picture I took through the fence.)

I do not mind pictures being added in here after the questions have been answered, but a separate thread like Bad Picture Quiz part 2....3....4 would probably be better. That way each picture can have it's own specific disscussion and yet still be tied to the original thread. Like I said I'm curious to see how far this might actually go.

909, absolutely. That was the easy part.

85-87, excellent. It was the late summer of 1986.

The field is the killer question and from whats available in the picture I don't expect an answer. However I will reveal the field on Friday if no one gets it before that time.

No, it's not Manassas. I'm going to let the guesses continue for the rest of today and tomorrow I will give a totally useless clue as to the location. Did I mention that I have the next five days off and I'm already more than a little bored?

Okay Mike, that's a good point. But maybe we should include a tag like [BAD PHOTO] in the subject header to identify these mystery photos for those who are interested and warn off those who may not be.

Like you, Mike, I've recently come into a collection of old photos -- in my case, about 60,000 negs and slides of antiques, warbirds, and contemporary military taken by one photographer from the 1950s through last year -- and his estate has asked me to scan and make them publicly available. It will take me years to scan enough of them to make a decent web site, but in the meantime I can dribble some on here and I would certainly appreciate the help of WIX denizens filling in the details of the less adequately labeled ones. I'll get a couple up on another thread right now.

At least include some leading tag. "Bad Photo" may not be the best tag, since in the context we are using, no photo really is bad if you can't go out and take the same picture today.

Yes, and I had really made little progress scanning my own collection of ~10,000 negs/slides back to 1980. Luckily I have the rest of my life to get around to it before some other poor slob inherits the combined pile.

The pics filled about 130 3-ring binders which I had to drive from St. Louis to NY (16 hours) in a rented Impala with the trunk filled to the top and the back seat filled to the windows, but it was worth it to preserve the pics. I am glad to hear that these older collections are finding their way to enthusiasts with the will and means to save and share them. There seems to be so much more interest in pics from the early days of the antique/warbird movement now. I wonder if there should be a forum where those charged with preserving such collections can share info and advice ... or perhaps we are not too great an imposition on WIX ...

Yes, I envisioned "Bad Photo" as being somewhat tongue-in-cheek, or maybe more in the Richard Pryor/Gene Wilder sense ("'at's right, 'at's right, we bad") but "Older Photo" works for me too.
