BoB Buchons and more...pics added

Thu Aug 10, 2006 9:28 pm

This came to me today via Gerald Martin and I though you guys may like a look. Here is what Gerald says about the pic:

"It's 1968 and Lefty Gardner #7 and I #5 are on a photo mission just off the coast of Southern Spain."

Here's another of Gerald rounding the pylons at Reno in the late, lamented CAF FM-2. There may be others coming from Gerald which I will be all too happy to share if you guys are interested.

Love the pics!
Got any more?!!
I don't think they are close enough to the camera.
There is way too much of Lefty's Buchon in the frame.
Do you think he should've pulled it in a little tighter?

Chad, thanks for posting the stuff from Gerald. I had the pleasure of meeting & spending some time with him down in Harligen back in the good old days. He is quite a charcter. :D Please pass on my regards.

More BoB stuff from Gerald. I'll let his captions do the talking.

"This a shot of me when being checked out in the two seat 109 in 1968.....Unusual aeroplane by any standard."

"A tie clasp depicting the 7th fighter/bomber wing of the Spanish Airforce. These were given to us four American pilots taking part in the film. We are the only ones outside of the Spainish to be so honored...By the way Buchon means Pelican. The Spainish pilots never referred to the one hundred and nine by anything other than Messers...Thought this might be of interest.."

There's a great deal left of the Wildcat. I understand it was just sold.

Funny you should ask, this just showed up in my email! Rest assured, I will be inquiring about the "Wildcat Glider" comment. I also hope to get Gerald to relate some of his opinions on flying the Buchon at some point.

"Here's a shot of the Wildcat after paint job, red-white-blue, what else?? I kept the aeroplane here at my home base long enough to do a lot of badly needed restoration including the paint job and recover of the control surfaces.......
This was taken over the flat plains of the Texas panhandle and the machine was in perfect shape.
I flew that machine for over twenty years and am the only fully qualified Wildcat Glider Pilot in the World......A long story that may or may not be of interest."

According to Preserved Axis Aircraft, the HA-1112-M4L is still thought to
be there. There is a Brad Pilgrim phot at the PAA site, tho I forget how
long ago he took them Rick.
