What was that Movie?

Sun Jul 09, 2006 2:40 pm

Hey guys,
I remember seeing a movie, late 70s I think, about a P-40 pilot in the desert, being chased by a German tank crew. He couldn't fly, as his aircraft was damaged, but could taxi about and glide a bit, staying just ahead of his nemesis. I can't remember the name of the movie or how it turned out. Maybe a future DVD release?

Hi Blacksheep, and welcome. The movie was "Death Race", a 1973 made
for TV movie with Lloyd Bridges, Roy Thinnes and Doug McClure. Check
out www.imdb.com for details and interesting commentary.
aka "State of Division", wtf!..who came up with that one?

Thanks airnutz,
That sounds like the one. I wonder if this might be a case of remembering a movie as being alright, then going back and seeing it years later and saying "What the heck was I thinking?"

Here's another one. What was the movie that had Burgess Meredith as an F-86 pilot trying to kill another guy in a race car as they raced across country? It was set sometime in the future .

And yet another, though my memory of it is very vague as I was quite young. However, I do recall a movie where a guy, I think he was either an airshow pilot or a race pilot, decides to commit suicide by diving his Bearcat into the ground only to be thwarted by someone in a Mustang. (possibly his wife or girlfriend?) This was just one scene in the movie and I don't recall anything else. Anybody remember anything like that or did I just dream it up in my head?

Can't remember the name, Ober would know, but they were racing to the free land, California. Death Race or something like that...

Almost, Ole Suzanne was the 51 driver and the James Farintino (mis spelled) the 'ole ex was a war vet. She was going away as she told the guy on the ground and then James Farnitino, ( I know its mis spelled) jumps into the Bearcat and stops her.
I think that one was Sky Fire, again, Ober would know...

Yuppers, Majors was driving a can-am car with a kid and they would stop at old gas stations and cyphon gas from the underground tanks to keep going... Gasoline cars were outlawed, there was some kind of plague, in the end Meredith flew into a radar controled gun battery so Majors could escape and make it to cali.....

side note, the movie poster shows an F4 attacking the car......hollywood does it again...

Thanks for reminding me of Death Race.

According to the IMDB, I was 9 when it was shown on TV in 1973 and I remember staying up "late" to watch it.

Haven't seen it since then, but I definitely remember the Kittyhawk.

There were two P-40's used in "Death Race". The featured P-40 was actually a TP-40 with the rear canopy painted over. It was Frank Tallman's TP-40 at the time and is now fully restored and flying with Kermit Weeks.
The movie actually holds up over the years. A little silly, but better than I remember it being. I bought a VHS copy on Ebay last year.

Thanks for the confidence Lynn in my knowing trivia like that, but I think I might have missed those two. While on the subject of aviation movies with questionable scripts what was the name of a movie where teenangers go to North Korea to rescue their dad and fly away in an AN-2 taking off on runway three-niner. Still brings a chuckle trying to figure out that heading. It might have been one of the Iron Eagle series of what twenty of them, but don't remember as which one if it is. Has to be the worst aviation movie of all time.

What was the movie were this kid puts up a commando action to go get his Dad from some Commie country and they escape with a Bristol 170?
