New Book: Q-Birds--American Manned Aircraft as Drones

Sat Dec 14, 2024 4:45 pm

Q-Birds is a new book being released next week (December 19) on the manned drones operated by the U.S. military through the years. I've gotten an advance copy of the book and find it particularly fascinating for the detail on the DB-17/QB-17 operations in the late 1940s and 1950s, but it well-covers the gamut of drone development and operations from the 1920s through the 2020s.

I did a review of the book on the aerovintage site seen here: https://www.aerovintage.com/2024/12/14/new-book-on-q-birds/

And, for those so inclined, it is available as a preorder at Amazon here: https://amzn.to/3ZEvSy8

It's been out a while; it's a well-written book! I'm proud to have had a minor input into it too :)

Thank you for the review, Scott. Any coverage of the 15 Sikorsky S-55’s modified as QS-55 to mimic the Mi-24 Hind?

Taking a look at the book...no, does not seem to be there. There is, though, a section on some Kaman helicopter drones.
