Mars updates?

Thu Dec 05, 2024 12:42 pm

A friend forwarded a photo he received of the Mars in NATS markings flying in B.C. I don't know when the photo was taken, but I wondered if it could be a test flight before its cross country.

Any word on the scheduled flight to Pima?

Heard it was test flown on Tuesday - only video I've found so far is this one:

That is an awful bit of video: hard to believe anyone has equipment that bad nowadays!

There is a beautiful video on YouTube of the 'on the step' fast taxi a few days ago.

Plan I've seen online for the Philippine Mars is to fly some hours locally then they are flying it down the west coast with stops in San Francisco and San Diego before it heads inland to Arizona.

Any word where they're going to land it in AZ?

Strange that nothing better has surfaced so far. The step taxi video is indeed beautifully shot.

I know that not everyone is willing to go on Facebook, but there have been a number of videos of a decently good quality, of the Mars in flight. I get it, Facebook definitely has its negative aspects, but, for things like this, it's worth it.

Can anyone help me out why the engine face on the Mars seems so different than other 3350 equipped aircraft? The intake around the shaft seems almost blocked by some sort of expanded screen/diffuser. I understand the Mars was not intended for high altitude or high-speed flight.

I sent an email to Pima's "Director of Collections" asking how they get it the 200 miles from the lake to the museum.

I'm curious to get information straight from the source.

It will be interesting to see if they respond.
If they do, I'll post it here.

I would expect/hope they do respond, after all we're not dealing with Paul Allen-type organization.

Due to its size, any disassembly with be a huge deal. And depending on the way the wing box or attachments are done, a bit of major surgery.

I believe this was to keep sea spray off of the prop/engine and cooling due to the reversible pitch propellers.

I spoke with somebody who volunteers at the museum and was told that the museum has not yet made a final decision as to where the Mars will be delivered. Under consideration are both Roosevelt and Pleasant lakes as well as the Gulf of Mexico somewhere near Rocky Point. Apparently the idea of dredging a canal in Tucson somewhere near the museum has also been discussed! Not sure how serious they are about that last idea but there it is none the less.

Looks like they intend to be leaving the province by the weekend.
