Info on VC-87 Avenger gunner

Wed Jul 17, 2024 5:28 pm

A friend's father was a gunner on an Avenger, apparently with VC-87 at one time. Here's a little bit of profile on him: https://soledadmemorial.org/plaques/pet ... mes-foley/

I assume that he was with VC-87 as he served for awhile aboard the Escort Carrier USS Salamaua. His daughter remembers the story of the kamikaze strike of January 13, 1945. James had gone below deck to get a comic book and missed the attack; he was assumed dead until he showed up a bit later.

Anyway, could anyone here fill in some blanks as to the rest of his service?

Thanks,

Dave

Fixed the link, which somehow I posted incorrectly. Hope someone can fill in some blanks for his service record.

If they weren't destroyed in the fire that consumed a lot of the World War Two and Korean War personnel records in the 70's.

He should be fine, according to the NPRC page about the fire, only Army and Air Force records were affected.
